General Secretary Obama has spoken
(CBS News) President Obama’s top aide addressed the latest controversy over contraception coverage, saying on CBS News’ “Face the Nation” Sunday that the latest iteration of the new rule, which was announced Friday, will go forward.
“We’re going to go ahead and implement it,” White House Chief of Staff Jack Law said.
After being pressed by host Bob Schieffer about the White House’s latest change to its contraception coverage policy and the push-back the administration is receiving from the Catholic Church, Lew said the White House is comfortable with its decision.
“We have broad consensus – not universal consensus – that this is an approach that’s right,” Lew said.
Last time I checked, the 1st Amendment did not include any mention of taking away religious freedom based on “consensus.” But, when have liberals ever really worried about the Constitution, especially as they move America down the road to Greece and government run single payer health care?
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops denounced the modification in a lengthy statement: “We will therefore continue – with no less vigor, no less sense of urgency – our efforts to correct this problem through the other two branches of government.”
With all due respect, many Catholics should have thought twice before supporting the passage of ObamaCare.
“The solution that the president announced on Friday is one that puts no institution that claims religious objection because it’s related to the church, whether it’s Catholic hospital or a Catholic university, in a position where they either have to pay for it or provide benefits that they find objectionable,” Lew told Schieffer. “But women will have the right to get them.”
Lew said that change does the job of “reconciling two very important principles.”
The Constitution contains no provision in which Someone Else should pay for contraception, sterilization, nor Plan B pills. It does contain something about Congress passing no law that denies the free exercise of religion, though. Without the mandate, women can still get all these measures, but, they would have to pay the small costs themselves. Obama and the Left are attempting to paint this issues as a “women vs. religion” one.
But, this is not about religion. It never was. It’s about intrusive and dictatorial Central Government mandating their version of “rights”. It just happened that HHS finally got around to making this rule up, and were probably shocked by the response, as they didn’t think about it beforehand. HHS has been given immense power to make the rules up as they go, via ObamaCare. And Liberals should remember something: a GOP President will get to pick a new Director of HHS, who can then change the rules just as easily, if the GOP is unable to get ObamaCare rescinded quickly.
And for those who say “but, 28 states have something similar”, well, yes, they do, and that is allowed under the 10th Amendment and their own state constitutions. I’ll avoid giving a lecture on Constitution 101, as those of you who aren’t liberals have already taken the course, passing it with an A+.
FDR was once questioned on his taking away of rights. His response was that he still allowed freedom of religion. Looks like the machine has now targeted that as well. I don’t think people understand that it is not only our great leaders that have subverted our freedom. Certainly People like Wilson, FDR, LBJ, Bush and Obama have done their part, but there are a number of local, state and federal employees that make little decisions every day that adds to the misery and the loss of what was America.
This is good! Let the Left make their stand on this hill! This may be the straw that breaks the camel’s back for too many people. I said before that the administration would NEVER back down on this – abortion is a pillar of Liberalism. Liberalism is fueled by the blood of the unborn.
