Happy Sunday! Another gorgeous day in America. Who’s going to win the Super Bowl? I have the Panthers by 4, 35-31, with the Panthers stifling a late Peyton Manning comeback for the win. This very interesting pinup is by Gil Elvgren, with a wee bit of help.

   Re #12. It’s suspicious when a “news” story is only covered by the right-wing media, especially something as easily confirmed by skeptical reporting as a “blacks only” dorm at a state university.

   Is this claim true? “The University of Connecticut is building a new residence hall that will segregate black people away from the general student population.”

   Apparently not, but these sorts of memes race through the right-wing-o-sphere with little skeptical examination. This one appears to have started with Glenn Beck’s The Blaze.

   Snopes.com is just a mom-and-pop operation that was started by two people who have absolutely no formal background or experience in investigative research.

   TheBlaze, LOL.

   The spokesperson from UConn explained what was really happening and it’s easy to see how a biased pseudo-news org like TheBlaze, LOL, could get it wrong. And time after time the right-wing blogosphere has acted as stenographers for rags like TheBlaze, LOL, or Breitbart, LOL. They are also often fooled by satire sites such as The Onion. Ah, skeptics, LOL.

   And what they said confirms that there will be a new dorm, with either a floor or section devoted to black males.

   Apparently you didn’t read the statements on snopes.com

   ScHOLA²RS House is a Learning Community designed to support the scholastic efforts of male students who identify as African American/Black through academic and social/emotional support, access to research opportunities, and professional development. The intent of this Learning Community is to increase the retention and persistence of students using educational and social experiences to enhance their academic success at UConn and beyond in graduate and professional school placement. ScHOLA²RS House will encourage involvement with the larger university community to foster peer and mentor relationships and will actively engage students in inclusion efforts at UConn.

   If I apply to live in ScHOLA²RS House, will I be segregated from the rest of campus?

   No. Typically, students do not spend their days in their residence hall.

   Why would a student or the school worry about a segregation question unless the so called “community” was in fact segregated?

   The school admits that at the very least a section of the dorm is for black males only.

   UConn is taking a beating over this and the school is trying to put a spin on it.
