Democrats just won’t give up on their Quixotic adventure to obtain Trump’s taxes for partisan personal purposes, but, so far, this bit of moonbattery is going nowhere

Mnuchin rejects Democrats’ subpoena for Trump’s tax returns

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Friday rejected a subpoena from House Democrats demanding President Trump’s tax returns, setting the stage for a court battle over the documents.

Mnuchin said the House Ways and Means Committee’s request “lacks a legitimate legislative purpose,” citing the legal advice of the Justice Department in denying the demand.

“We are unable to provide the requested information in response to the Committee’s subpoena,” Mnuchin wrote.

Last week, Rep. Richard E. Neal (D-Mass.), chairman of the committee, issued subpoenas that gave Mnuchin and Internal Revenue Service Commissioner Charles Rettig until Friday at 5 p.m. to turn over Trump’s financial records. House Democrats have expressed confidence the law requires the IRS to permit them to access the tax returns, a position supported by numerous legal experts.

The relevant statute that authorizes Congress to see tax returns of U.S. citizens and businesses requires said “legitimate legislative purpose”, and wanting to see them because Democrats are mad Hillary lost and Trump won is not a legitimate reason. If it ever goes to court, Democrats will eventually lose (after finding a friendly judge at first), because they have no legitimate reason other than Orange Man Bad. No Mueller, no McGahn and stalled investigations leave House Democrats frustrated 

An increasing number of House Democrats are frustrated by their stalled investigations into President Trump, with an uncooperative chief executive, their own leader’s reluctance about impeachment and courts that could be slow to resolve the standoff.

Democrats have yet to hear from special counsel Robert S. Mueller III, who led the nearly two-year investigation into Russia interference in the 2016 election and possible involvement with the Trump campaign. Even with negotiations, the earliest Mueller could testify would be next month.

And any hopes of former White house counsel Donald McGahn facing a congressional panel on Tuesday are slim, as the White House moves to block all current and former aides from cooperating with congressional inquiries.

Weighing all options, Democrats have raised the specter of imposing fines or jailing people who ignore subpoenas, extreme measures that have prompted some legal experts to wonder whether Democrats have a strategy for this constitutional conflict.

Mueller did speak: it was in a 400+ page report that most Democrats failed to read, because it didn’t give them what they want. And most of their investigations are simply of the butthurt variety from losing in 2016. Keep tilting at windmills, Dems, you’ll guarantee Trump’s re-election.

    Can you point out to us hapless readers where in 26 U.S. Code § 6103 (f) this language occurs? Or (more likely) from where you copied that information? We see “shall furnish”…

    Mnuchin claims trump did not ask him to ignore the perfectly legal requests. trump is hoping to run out the clock until he cuts a deal and resigns.

    Pursuant to an action by, and upon written request by the chairman of, a committee of the Senate or the House of Representatives (other than a committee specified in paragraph (1)) specially authorized to inspect any return or return information by a resolution of the Senate or the House of Representatives or, in the case of a joint committee (other than the joint committee specified in paragraph (1)) by concurrent resolution, the Secretary shall furnish such committee, or a duly authorized and designated subcommittee thereof, sitting in closed executive session, with any return or return information which such resolution authorizes the committee or subcommittee to inspect. Any resolution described in this paragraph shall specify the purpose for which the return or return information is to be furnished and that such information cannot reasonably be obtained from any other source.

      The part that you and the author seem to be missing is that Nixon approved the release of his tax returns for the audit.

      That’s quite different than the Trump case.

      Furthermore, while quoting the law on the tax returns, you failed to quote the laws on the scope of the powers of the committee that wants to tax return. It is far outside of their jurisdiction and powers.

      Funny how the laws and circumstances that show the fallacy and the hate of the left are ignored by the left.

          The scope of the committees by law is for using tax information to recommend tax rates. It is not a criminal investigative body.

          As you have stated, the Committee members want to look at the taxes so they can 1) show Trump didn’t pay taxes or something (which is outside the scope of their statutory mandate) or 2) they want to see how much Trump made, is worth, gave to charity, etc, in order to try and embarrass him in some way. That too is outside the mandate of the committee.

          If the federal laws allow for a Committee to demand the tax returns of a President, then why are the Democrats trying to push a law that requires Presidents release their tax returns?

          Even they don’t believe what they are saying and their actions prove it.

          It just so much hate from the left.

          Then again, that is all they have.

      Congress does, as part of their oversight function. Presidential candidates have traditional revealed their tax returns, and trump promised he would, but was lying. No one cares about his gross income (although he surely lies about it). No one cares about his taxes paid unless he committed tax fraud (he’s confessed to that before). No one cares about his charitable giving (his fraudulent charitable foundation was shut down).

      What might his tax returns reveal?

      The SOURCES of his income. Anti-money laundering investigators at Deutsche bank reported suspicious activity in trump and Kushner accounts, but bank officers refused to investigate.

      How troubling are his violations of the emoluments clause?

      How he avoided paying taxes. The over $400 million his dad transferred to him using various illegal tax dodges is long past the statute of limitations. Is trump using similar methods to transfer monies to his kids?

      For the past 40 years or so, candidates have revealed their tax returns, trump said he would, but was clearly lying. Why?
