Saddam Sentenced To Death: Where’s The Civil War?

Good news all around (from MSNBC)

Iraq's High Tribunal on Sunday found Saddam Hussein guilty of crimes against humanity and sentenced him to hang for the 1982 killing of 148 Shiites in the city of Dujail. The visibly shaken former leader shouted "God is great!"

Excellent news. I failed to find anything regarding a civil war, or even more then normal violence, occcuring, per this post. The worst of the lot, which the Washington Post included in their headline (since changed to avoid the Tikrit reference), was

In Tikrit, Saddam's hometown, 1,000 people defied the curfew and carried pictures of the city's favorite son through the streets.

Everywhere else, Iraqi's seemed to be celebrating.

Celebratory gunfire rang out elsewhere in Baghdad, and the people in Sadr City, the capital's Shiite slum, celebrated in the streets, calling out "Where are you Saddam? We want to fight you."

People were celebrating in the streets of Dujail, a Tigris River city of 84,000, as the verdict was read. They burned pictures of their former tormentor.

Celebratory gunfire also rang out in Kurdish neighborhoods across the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk, where taxi driver Khatab Ahmed sat on a mattress in his living room to watch trial coverage with his wife and six children.

"Thank God I lived to see the day when the criminals received their punishment," the 40-year-old exclaimed on hearing of Saddam's death sentence.

Back to the Washington Post, I have to wonder where they came up with this

"Long live the people!" Hussein shouted as the verdict began. "Down with the stooges! Down with the invaders! God is great!"

In no other story does that line appear. Every other story, such as the AP one, includes this

Saddam yelled out, "Long live the people and death to their enemies. Long live the glorious nation, and death to its enemies!"

Another case of the "progressive" media making something up, Wash Post?

The comments at the Washington Post also include the typical leftist blame America, BDS, and "can we cut and run in Iraq now?" posts, as well as "November Surprise!" and wondering about the timing. LOL. Too much fun, have to post a few

  • Thats Super! Now can we leave Iraq??? p.s. Karl Rove Im still voting Democrat on tuesday
  • Sadam is sentenced to death for killing 148 civilians 24 years ago. What will Bush and Blair get for illegally attacking Iraq and starting an illegal war that has already killed 500,000.
  • – OCTOOOOOOBER SURPRISE!!!!!!! AND THEY SAVED IT UNTIL NOOOOOOVEMBER!!!!!!
  • – Was this staged to happen just before the U.S. elections??How convenient!!!No we are the ones with a maniacal leader. Lucky us!
  • Although George W.s actions cannot be compared to those of Husseins, with respect to the term genocide, but its pretty damn close – the only difference is he is sending them away to be killed, instead of doing it himself. HANG GEORGE W!!!!
  • Okay Saddams trial is about done when will Bushs start?
  • Oh, I will be voting democrat on Tuesday, moorehoney, but like MRMister said, this announcement was made for political gains. I hate to say it but our country will be still under control by the Republican dictators until 2009.
  • To kill someone by hanging, is what we call civilization?
  • Too bad! Theyre hanging the wrong people. It should be Bush, Cheney, and the rest of their criminal regime they murdered over 600,000 Iraqis in the name of their version of democracy and justice

OK, enough, same old same old. Notice, the death penalty is OK for the leaders of the USA, but not anyone else. Will liberals/progressives/surrender monkeys protest the death sentence and talk Saddam up like they tend to do with stone cold killers, such as Tookie Williams? Others on the case:

    Oh yeah? Well, well…

If the Republicans win on Tuesday, there WILL be a civil war, you just wait and see! ;)

  5. I knew this was going to happen. First they catch him or kill him (I think they’d rather have killed him), then it’s off to the Show Trial where only limited charges are brought and no new light is cast on his regime, and it’s off to a quick hanging. Hands washed and dried. Now, I know the conservative voters are too stupid and incurious to feel this way, but don’t the rest of us want to hear what this man has to say? Don’t we want full investigations of all his allegedly nefarious activities? What about the UN/Oil For Food scandal (I thought you sleazy, lying cons at least cared about that!)? Anybody curious? Don’t we want to know what was really going on in Saddam’s Iraq – the weapons, the oppression, the corruption? No? I mean, sure, we know that we have to take his words for what they’re worth, but don’t we want to at least hear them? What about his alleged ties to terrorists, stupid fuckin’ cons? Wouldn’t we want to hear what he has to say about that? No? Afterall, Iraq is the “Central Front” in the idiotic “War on Terror,” isn’t it?

    Sheesh.

It is remarkable that Saddam has been sentenced for a crime he committed in 1982, at a time when the USA was more than eager to provide support to Saddam Hussein’s regime and was complicit in some of his crimes. As usual, this fact has not even been mentioned by our amnesiac media. Donald Rumsfeld, the incarnation of this administration’s moral bankruptcy, went to Baghdad shaking hands with Saddam, on December 20, 1983 (http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/NSAEBB/NSAEBB82/).

At that time, Rumsfeld knew that Saddam was a dangerous dictator (contrary to 2003, when he wasn’t dangerous any more). He knew about the 1982 massacre that has now been recognized as a “crime against humanity”. Donald Rumsfeld knew that Saddam had ordered the use of chemical weapons against Iran in breach of the Geneva conventions (contrary to 2003, when Rumsfeld knew exactly that there were no chemical weapons). And he went to Baghdad in 1983, shaking hands with Saddam Hussein, offering him the support of the United States. That’s the story that will be told in the history book.

  7. So, it is all America’s fault, right?

    Pathetic.
