Quagmire: 2. A difficult or precarious situation; a predicament. (Merriam-Webster Dictionary.
What is happening in the Ivory Coast at this time has moved beyond the smartass post Quagmire! from early this afternoon. It is a problem. It is all good and fun to denigrate the French, however, the situation in in the Ivory Coast has become a serious one.
Angry anti-French demonstrators in Ivory Coast’s main city, Abidjan, marched on the airport, within hours of it coming under French control.
French helicopters fired warning shots to try to stop the tens of thousands of government loyalists moving forward.
Correspondents in Abidjan – Ivory Coast’s economic capital in the south of the country – spoke of hearing loud explosions and heavy gunfire.
Red tracer bullets streaked across the night sky, Reuters news agency reported.
And the bad news just keeps coming. Looting, violence, buildings set afire. Chirac has ordered the "immediate destruction of Ivorian military aircraft used in recent days in violation of the ceasefire".
Rioters were seen brandishing axes, machetes and clubs as they roamed the streets shouting "French go home!" and "Everybody get your Frenchman!"
Despite my smartalek post of earlier, I mean this in all seriousness, the Ivory Coast may be on the verge of full blown war with the French and UN forces, as well as the possibility of a resurgent civil war. I really hope that I am wrong.
