CNET has an article about the Cingular/AT&T Wireless merger, 5 Things to Know. Let me add a few (was given permission to post bland things)
- If you live in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Puerto Rico, you will not be a Cingular customer. You will be part of SunComm. This is due to agreements made with the FCC for thier approval, and gives Cingular alot of $$$, as well as allows the takeover of the AT&T Virginia liscense, which includes the NE part of NC and the Outer Banks.
- If you are an AT&T NC or SC customer, assume at this time that mobile to mobile to any Cingular customer or AT&T customers in other states is no longer valid. If I am told different, I will let y’all know.
- If you have a GSM phone with AT&T now, you do not necessairly need a new phone. It can be subsidy unlocked. However, this can take anywhere from 2 business days to 2 weeks. Gotta get the codes, and taint that easy.
- Your AT&T contract is not voided due to the merger, nor is it voided for those who become SunComm. If your bank mergers or is sold to another owner, that doesn’t void your car or mortgage payment. If you cancel for any reason, early termination fees will be charged.
- On the plus side, there are some incredible things coming down the pike, such as TV on your phone, high speed internet access, and some incredible phones. GSM is the world standard, and gets higher priority for development then any other protocol.
- A GSM network is less expensive then the other types. 75% of putting a tower up is regulations, not money. And the towers and capabilities are easily modified.
Hope that helps out a bit. And here is a photo from my Razor. Not to shabby for low light and a phone, eh?
I really detest the FCC
The only guy to vote against the merger was Michael Copps, the same Democrat tha spearheaded the fines on cBS for the Janet Jackson fiasco, a Fox reality show, and against Howard Stern and Clear Channel Co. Guy has a serious bug up his bumm
Dang, that looks like crap. I’ve got an AT&T phone, primarily so I could call other AT&T phones. I never heard of SunComm.
If I find out different, I will let you know about the MTM. Until someone tells me different, I will go with the no MTM thing, though. I could be wrong, but, I would stay on the safe side.
Nice picture!
not bad for a phone, eh? Some are even higher resolution, for those “I have got to get this on film quick” moments.
What effect does this merger have on those who lease property for cell sites with both AT&T and Cingular? Will they terminate one lease and consolidate?
