This old redneck is truly saddened by the demise of James Doohan, who played, of course, Scotty on the original Star Trek.
The publicist for James Doohan says the actor who played Scotty on “Star Trek” has died at his home in Redmond, Wash. He was 85. The cause of his death was pneumonia and Alzheimer’s disease.
In Doohan’s biography on the official Star Trek Web site, Doohan is described as once being the “craziest pilot in the Canadian Air Forces.”
Doohan’s “Star Trek” character often played a central role in the series and movies, troubleshooting problems on the Starship Enterprise to save the day.
Though I was really too young to watch Star Trek when it first came out, I remember being a young lad in the early 70’s, watching repeats on Channel 11 out of NYC every Saturday night at 6pm, eating supper. I remember watching all the movies, and reading all the books. James made the part of Scotty, he created the way that the character would be played. The part wasn’t written that way originally. James brought something just as special to Star Trek as did Leonard Nimoy, Deforrest Kelley, and William Shatner. God Bless you, James, R.I.P.
Did you know he was wounded on D-day? Shot over 6 times. Once in the chest. He was saved by his cigarette case. He also lost his middle finger I believe on his right hand.
“Scotty” gave some good entertainment to the world. We are blessed to have enjoyed his talent.
Yup. He was one of a kind.
Yep, may he rest in peace. He’s been beamed up to a better place.
