Senate Thumbs Nose at ACLU: takes Boy Scouts Side

How great is this?

The Senate voted Tuesday to allow U.S. military bases to continue to host Boy Scout events, responding to lawsuits and a federal court ruling aimed at severing relationships between the government and the youth group.

In a 98-0 vote, the Senate approved the provision continuing the hosting of Boy Scout events as part of massive bill setting Defense Department policy for next year. After the vote, Senate leaders decided to put off further debate and votes on the overall bill, probably until fall when Congress returns from a monthlong break.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., a former Boy Scout who sponsored the Senate provision, said it is necessary to push back on a spate of lawsuits to limit Boy Scout activities on government property. The provision adopted Tuesday says Boy Scouts should be treated the same as other national youth organizations

Frist said it "removes any doubt that federal agencies may welcome Scouts to hold meetings, go camping on federal property or hold scouting events and public forums" on government property.

The Boy Scouts have long been a choice target of the ACLU, because, *GASP* the Boy Scouts promote clean living, good, moral values, a relationship with God, and do not allow homosexuals into their organization either as leaders or members. The ACLU has sued and sued an sued to make the Boy Scouts, a private organization, change the way it works, and to make sure the BSA has no access to an government property for meetings. This is a big finger in the eye of the ACLU, poked by the US Senate.

It is important to restate that the vote was 98-0. Even the most liberal of Senators did not say no to the Bill. The ACLU had previously argued that "direct government sponsorship for Boy Scouts was discrimination. Just absurd. But, you know the ACLU will file yet another lawsuit, sucking up the People’s money in their quest to impose their views on the American People. They just do not care that they are imposing their views on civil liberties on people who think differently.

98-0!!! How awesome is that? Great post! Thanks, Jay

“and do not allow homosexuals into their organization either as leaders or members”

Actually, we do allow youth members who are homosexual. Just not adult leaders.

The biggest problem has been when a gay youth reaches 18 (which is the upper age limit for youth) and attempts to become an assistant scout master or other such leader. It’s rather an odd dichotomy which most of the guys I knew growing up in Scouts feel will probably not be the case in less than 20 years.

  3. Wasn’t there an issue with a young boy who claimed to be gay at one point? My memory could be off.

    Otherwise, I stand corrected.

It still amazes me that it was unanimous! Excellent! /TJ

The ACLU suffered a major setback recently when the Senate voted 98-0 to allow U.S. military bases to continue hosting Boy Scout events. The ACLU has long been opposed to the Boy Scouts endorsement of what they call the pernicious

I’m glad they let them stay. Seems like if they can let churches sponsor Scout troops they can let the military continue to do the same.

    Hiphiphooray!

I was getting REAL tired of the crap being dished out on the Boy Scouts.

ACLU: “Let’s see how we can take a great American organization and trash it.”

Well, ACLU, you lost this one big time!

    I have a question…who were the 2 that didn’t vote. I’d guess one was Kerry only because there’s a 70% chance I’d be right.

I worked for the scouts at summer camps as a youth and adult for 7 years and still volunteer from time to time at the camp to help. And as far as the issue of homosexuals in the scouts atleast in the council I worked in, we had quite a few youth and adult who were gay. We knew who was gay (and the council execs probably did to) and the such and they would discuss it in the presense of firends, but when it came to the kids bring it up never happened because it wasn’t the appropriate place for it. It was never an issue with them working with the scouts either because the nature of the youth protection training we all went through was designed to prevent any impropert behavior or accusations of the such for bothe youth and scouts. Actually the youth protection was quite interesting because you realize how things you don’t even think about can be come problem for anyone. From my experience the scouts have gone out of their way to protect youth and adults from abuse (so long as they follow the guidelines like no scout is ever alone with a adult). it works quite well, which makes the idea of homosexual adult leaders possible (so long as they don’t use their role in such a means not consistent with the scouting policies).

To expand on it it also word the same way with atheiest youth and adults, where it was never made an issue and they weren’t bothered by the emphasis on relgion in the scouts.
