There is a rather interesting story out of Durham, NC:
Even the high school for the state’s science and math elite can’t find enough girls willing to become computer geeks. So it’s deleting boys from one of its techie classes.(at the NC School of Science and Mathematics
So, starting in October, the school will offer a computer science class for girls only. The hope is that without the know-it-all boys there, the girls will find the same allure in programming as they do in mapping genes and solving equations.
So, where is the ACLU in this? Why are they not jumping butting in, since this is obviously a sexist program? Why are they not protecting the Rights of the men to be treated equally? Will they get involved, or will they just ignore this?
But several NCSSM teachers chafe at the idea of segregating students.
"I think it would inevitably carry a message of, ‘There’s something wrong with you, that we need a special course just for you,’ " said Peggy Craft, a math teacher who has taught computer science. "It just seems wrong to pick gender as the way to do the division. The real issue is lack of confidence and lack of real experience."
So where are you, ACLU? I feel discriminated against. The ACLU is supposed to protect ALL our Rights, even against our wishes. But will they? I doubt it. They are hypocrites.
Just for reference, though I can see Ms Craft’s point, I support this type of separation. There are times where men and women need to be separated. Much of the rest of the article describes the conditions that cause women to not take computer classes. If this gets them to enroll in the classes, and participate without worry, great. Do it. I simply wish to highlight the ACLU’s hypocrisy. The ACLU has jumped in many times where it is a men’s only institution, such as the Citadel cases, without regard to the men’s Rights. But they fail to respond in a case such as this. And this IS a State funded school.

Pfft.
This better not cost me more money for social engineering crap. If the girls don’t want to take programming, why the heck are we punishing the boys because of it?
Hmm, you might be convincing me to write the ACLU.
Great job pointing out where the ACLU is not.
