House Speaker Jim Black confirmed Friday that his office received two subpoenas earlier this week from a federal grand jury, ordering him to produce certain documents.
In a statement released late Friday, Black said he and his staff would cooperate. Ken Bell, attorney for the speaker’s office, said the U.S. Attorney’s Office asked that the subpoenas not be released publicly.
"My staff and I will comply with any and all requests by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for further information and records in an effort to answer questions they may have regarding this matter," Black said.
He said he wished he could provide details, "but we have been informed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office that doing so could interfere or impede the investigation, which clearly we do not want to do."
Black’s statement came after The Charlotte Observer reported that the FBI is reviewing records tied to Black as part of an ongoing investigation into the video poker industry.
Agents requested records from Charlotte’s Carmel Country Club, where Black held five political meetings this year, the paper said. They also have looked at Black’s campaign finance reports more than once occasion in recent months, according to Gary Bartlett, executive director of the State Board of Elections.
Well, now, if we take the Democratic model used against Rove, Delay, Frist, Cheney, Bush, etc, then Black is guilty as charged, and must be thrown in jail IMMEDIATELY! Also, it’s not the charges themselves, but the fact that there is a hint of impropriety, so he needs to go. Now.
Of course, that is not how it works in my America, where even a slimeweasel like Jim Black is innocent till proven guilty. And, till shown proof otherwise, he shitweasel Jim shall stay innocent.
