From The Hill:
With Republicans seeking to define Democrats by their votes on such hot-button issues as gay marriage, the estate tax and flag burning, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is arguing that Democrats need to tell voters about themselves before Republicans succeed in doing it for them. The time to criticize the Republicans’ “culture of corruption,†a Democratic refrain for nearly a year, is at an end, Pelosi said; Democrats need to begin promoting their own vision of America.
“Now it’s time to talk about us. Enough of the Republicans. It’s time for us to talk about what are the priorities we’d like to see addressed, if we have the opportunity,†Pelosi said in an interview with The Hill on Wednesday.
It’s impressive that she “gets it,” but it is a little too late. The Democrats have already defined themselves decades ago, and continue to add to their unsavory reputation. Abortion on demand, partial birth abortion, no parental notification of a pending abortion, high taxes, huge social programs, weak on defense and national security, the Nanny State, etc, and so one. Added to this are agendas such as treating international terrorism by people out to destroy America as a simple law enforcement problem, much like dealing with a pesky burgler, and handing our security over to the United Nations.
Take a little slice of cut and run, so they can relive the end of the Vietnam War, add a dash of Free Speech restriction and a pinch of putting enemy’s Rights over the safety of Americans, and you have a very noxious brew.
Dems will not listen to Pelosi. She isn’t being as anti-war as they want. Come November, they will still be talking about the “culture of corruption” and other meaningless bumper sticker slogans. Then they will wonder why they lost the mid-terms, and chalk it all up to those dastardly cheating Rethugs.
The Democrats are always trying to get a message out. But, they miss the point that their actions define their message. I can say I am 6’5″ for the next few years, trying to ingrane that message, but, if you see me, I am 5’8″. What I say may not match the reality. Which is why the Dems are always looking for a “message” to define themselves. Their actions are not very flattering.
I had fun translating Pelosi’s definition yesterday, too! “We are NOT Republicans” seems to be their recurring theme.
They think that will win them elections. Can’t wait to see their faces in November.
