If you look at it, it is the Democratic Party who has a long history of demeaning the troops (from GOP.com). Some highlights (lowlights?)
- -Sen. Durbin: "If I … did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners [at Guantanamo] in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their Gulags, or some mad regime, Pol Pot, or others that had no concern for human beings. Sadly, that is not the case. This was the action of Americans in the treatment of their prisoners." (Sen. Richard Durbin, Congressional Record, 6/14/05 p. S6594)
- -Rep. Murtha: "So things have gotten worse with our troops on the ground. What I'm saying is, our troops are the targets. They help recruit terrorists. That's the thing that worries me. We need to have a bipartisan solution to this thing." (CBS' "Face The Nation," 10/29/06)
- -Sen. Kennedy: 'The U.S. military presence has become part of the problem, not part of the solution,' Kennedy said in remarks prepared for delivery at Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies." (Lolita C. Baldor, "Kennedy Calls For Troop Withdrawal, Says Military Is Fueling Insurgents," The Associated Press, 1/27/05)
- -Rep. Pelosi Called Resolution To Support Troops "Bitter Pill." "As to the resolution in support of the troops, Ms. Pelosi regards it as 'a bitter pill.' Ever the pragmatist, she delivered a speech in opposition to its wording, then voted in favor." (Sheryl Gay Stolberg, "With Democrats Divided On War, Pelosi Faces Leadership Test," The New York Times, 4/1/03)
- -In 2003, Eleven House Democrats Voted Against Expressing Support And Thanks To U.S. Military Personnel Serving In Operation Iraqi Freedom. (H. Con. Res. 104, CQ Vote #83: R 392-11: D 167-11; I 1-0, 3/21/03)
- -In 2006, Rep. Pelosi And 63 Other House Democrats Voted Against Resolution That Institutions Of Higher Education Should Provide Military Recruiters With The Same Access Provided To Any Other Employer In Order To Be Eligible To Receive Certain Federal Funding. (H. Con. Res. 354, CQ Vote #39: Motion Agreed To 347-65: R 222-0; D 125-64; I 0-1, 3/14/06)
But don't tell the Left that they aren't supportive of the troops.
