This year, nearly half the fourth-graders in Sharon Watford's class at Lakewood Elementary School speak limited English.
Across the state, the number of English language learners with limited skills jumped 40 percent from 2002 to 2005, according to the state Department of Public Instruction.
In 2005, Spanish speakers made up 70 percent of those learning English in North Carolina's public schools, followed by the speakers of the Hmong language, which originated in China, according to the state Department of Public Instruction.
How many of these kids are the children of illegal and migrant worker parents? Neither deserves to be in our public school system. It is not our responsibility to educate people who are breaking our laws and/or not American citizens. That is our tax money, and it is no wonder more and more money has to be spent on building new schools.

State officials next month will begin cracking down on inefficiencies in the court interpreters system that went over budget by about $800,000 in fiscal 2005-06.
Interpreters in fiscal 2005-06 were paid out of a $1.2 million budget, but inconsistencies in the administration of the service could have led to payments exceeding budget, Stahl said.
There has been a huge spike in crime by Hispanics over the past few years, mostly by illegals and migrant workers. And the People of NC are paying the price, both as the victims and as taxpayers.
It's high time that people coming to the United States learn to speak English. Why is it incumbent on us, the legal residents of the USA, to learn Spanish or provide interpreters, in our country?
There is no problem with immigrants coming to the the USA legally, as tourists, workers, and for citizenship, at least from my end. If they are going to come as the last two, learn English. If they are not here for citizenship, they do not belong in state funded schools. If they get busted, let them pay for their own interpreters.
It’s beyond time.
But don’t look for the Democrats that run NC to do anything about the problem — except raise taxes and give the illegals more money.
Well, they do what they do best.
