Democrats Break Another Promise

First, the Democrats broke the promise to work in a bipartisan manner. Now, they break nancy Pelosi's promise to not raise taxes

WASHINGTON, Jan. 4 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Earlier today, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was elected as the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House. Following that vote the House of Representatives voted on H.R. 5 which sets forth the Rules of the House of Representatives for the 110th Congress. A key taxpayer protection provision, however, contains a significant loophole which will open the door to raise taxes over the next two years. The Republicans sought to amend the current rule to close the loophole which the Democrats in unison voted against.

"American taxpayers need to hold on to their wallets because the new House rules concerning taxes are not worth the paper they're written on," explained taxpayer advocate Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform." A rule which allows a simple majority to waive the three-fifths majority is devious, disingenuous, and slap in the face to every American taxpayer. If Pelosi and the rest of the new House leadership were serious about protecting American taxpayers then they would have amended the rules to ensure this key taxpayer protection cannot be waived.""

After spending an entire year on the campaign trail claiming she will not raise taxes, the first vote Nancy Pelosi brings to the floor for a vote as Speaker will open the door to billions and billions of dollars of tax increases over the next two years," continued Norquist. "And she fought tooth and nail to keep her colleagues votes so she can raise taxes for the next two years. Simply put, Pelosi and her new leadership team will need to raise taxes on working Americans to reward the raptorial spending interests who helped them get elected. Today will mark the first of many votes over the next two years which will seek to extract more money from hard-working Americans to grow the size of government."

Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) is a non-partisan coalition of taxpayers and taxpayer groups who oppose all federal, state and local tax increases. For more information or to arrange an interview, please contact John Kartchat (202) 785-0266 or at jkartch@atr.org

Granted, President Bush will surely veto any legislation that raises taxes. But what if he is left in a difficult position, such as a Bill funding Iraq or Afghanistan, which has a rider that raises some tax?

Bloggers, including me, said time and time again that raising taxes is part of the Democrats hidden agenda, just like abortion on demand, as seen in a previous post today. They have barely taken office as the Congressional Majority Party, and they are trotting them out. Soon, we should see their true surrender in Iraq legislation surface.

Linda Chavez, in a post about "where are the Dems big ideas, over at Townhall writes

And the Democrats can't claim much of a mandate on other issues either. Raising taxes — even if Democrats argue it is only on "the rich" — doesn't play well with most Americans……….

True, but when have the Democrats ever really cared about what most American want? Even the lowest, least educated, on welfare and government dependent Democrat see's themself as elitist, and believes that Democrats know best, so everyone should just deal with it.

Well, no, not elitist. The Latino packing house workers where I used to work, did NOT think of themselves as “elitist”. Also, many of them have families where both parents work full time. They dream of something better for their kids – they want good education and health care. Many of them have put kids through college while working for minimum wage in back breaking jobs. Those Bush “tax rebates” didn’t didn’t amount to much for these people.

  2. Perhaps the rebates weren’t much, but the tax cuts did allow families to keep at least $2000 more of their own money, the money they worked for.
