Breaking, from the Raleigh News and Observer
THE LATEST: Durham District Attorney Mike Nifong has asked to be removed from the Duke University lacrosse case.
- Nifong made the request in a letter delivered to the office of N.C. Attorney General Roy Cooper.
- The attorney general's office could take over the case.
- Duke University James Coleman said Nifong's move could restore public confidence in the case.
Nifong sent a letter to Cooper this afternoon, according to Noelle Talley, a spokesman for Cooper. The letter asked Cooper to appoint his office's special prosecution unit to take over the case, Talley said.
And then the special prosecutor can drop the case, and Nifong can say "hey, I wanted the case to go forward, but, it wasn't my call.
Hot Air has more information, including a bit about Nifong visiting the accuser and serving her with a subpoena.
Saturday update: From what I am hearing, if Nifong is excused, and NC AG Cooper has to appoint special counsel, the case would be strung out even further. I have to wonder if this is another Nifong manipulation to screw the defendents even more. I repeat my call for their lawyers to demand a speedy trial, per the Consititution.
I just posted on this after hearing the news alert on the Fox News Channel … my comment: TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE!
Way too late.
