Weeks after accusing President Bush of "shameful" behavior over the imprisonment of two Border Patrol agents who shot an unarmed suspected drug smuggler along the U.S.-Mexico border, a federal lawmaker turned up the heat further Wednesday, suggesting the president should be impeached if either of the two men is murdered in prison.
Speaking after the Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed that agent Ignacio Ramos was assaulted by inmates in his Mississippi prison over the weekend, California Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher had a warning for the White House.
"I tell you, Mr. President, if these men — especially after this assault — are murdered in prison, if one of them lose their lives, there's going to be some sort of impeachment talk in Capitol Hill," he told a press conference in Washington D.C.(Listen to Audio)
This is a Republican saying this, not a loony Democrat. Did the border agents do something wrong? Possibly, though, the evidence is not quite what it seems. Even so, there have been plenty of people who were pardoned for much lesser crimes, and they were people who were criminals, and some even went back to bad behavior. Think Marc Rich. Think frug dealers. Counterfitters. People who harm Americans.
Ramos and Jose Compean were charged with protecting our borders. The good guys. And deserve a pardon. As much as it pains me to write, if one of them is killed or seriously injured, I might have to agree with Rep. Rohrabacher.
Maybe I am letting my emotions get the best of me. It could be because North Carolina has been having plenty of illegal alien problems. We have the very violent gang MS-13 here in the Triangle area. We have illegals performing all sorts of crimes. I know people who have been screwed because an illegal caused a traffic accident, and, of course, they had no insurance. And President Bush has been as soft on illegal immigration as he has been tough on terrorists outside the country. And, guess what? There have been verified Middle Eastern people coming across our southern border.
