I just gotta say, when I first saw this news release at U.S. Newswire, I skipped by it, thinking "not more global warming as caused by Man leftwing hysteria. I have posted enough of that." But, after a couple of minutes, I couldn't resist. And it was actually worse then I expected
WASHINGTON, April 6 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today on a report by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group II on the effects of climate change:
"The new scientific report on global warming warns that global warming is already affecting the earth and that the effects are likely to be significant and widespread in this century, causing increased drought, drinking water shortages, and widespread extinction of species. Poor people around the world are especially vulnerable to the hazards of climate change.
"Global warming is already underway, but it is not too late to slow it down and reduce its harmful effects. We must base our actions on the moral imperative and the scientific record, free of political interference in scientists' assessments of the effects of climate change on society and the environment.
"In this Holy Week, we are reminded of these words in the Old Testament: 'To minister to the needs of God's creation is an act of worship. To ignore those needs is to dishonor the God who made us.' We must move quickly to honor God's creation by reducing greenhouse gas pollution in the United States and around the world."
She not only managed to work in the poor, but work in a Bible passage, which is apparently the only one she knows, since she has used it before. Personally, I am not really familiar with that passage, and it sure doesn't seem like any on line Bibile is, either. Perhaps someone more in the know can tell me if it is a real passage. But, as James Taranto wrote after one of the times she cited this "passage"
When a conservative politician cites the Bible in support of his views on, say, abortion or homosexuality, people like Pelosi get their backs up about the mingling of church and state. We guess Pelosi's defense here is that she's insincere, as evidenced by the reference in her press release to the pointedly uncapitalized "bible."
To make a long story short, the Democrats are attempting to frame the GWACBM debate in terms of saving the poor, a tired, old refrain that never really accomplishes anything. Wasn't the War on Poverty started by the Democrats back in the 60's? Where's the exit strategy?
In this case, I would suggest that ministering to people, God's creation, by allowing them to modernize, so they can have things like good food and shelter, rather then starving to death, would be a little more important to God, rather then saying "hey, we got our great lifestyle, but, since we feel that global warming is caused by Man (and leftwing blowhards), you can't have yours."
Poor people are particularly vunerable to the powerful and rich dictating how they will be able to live their lives. Especially politicians with no degrees in the subjects they can pass laws over.
Anyhow, I have to ask two series of questions. First, why is it acceptable to the leftwing hysterics to "slow global warming down?" If it is so bad, why not talk about ending it? (I'll let your imagination run wild over the possibilities)
Second, is Nancy walking the walk after talking the talk? Does she live the life she is telling, and possibly legislating, everyone else to live?
