Which begs the question, will the liberal GWACBM disciples go after China like they go after America? (Actually, it begs lots of questions, such as, why are they so fixated on blaming Man to start with, but, let’s move on, shall we?)
(Guardian) China has overtaken the United States as the world’s biggest producer of carbon dioxide, the chief greenhouse gas, figures released today show.
The surprising announcement will increase anxiety about China’s growing role in driving man-made global warming and will pile pressure onto world politicians to agree a new global agreement on climate change that includes the booming Chinese economy. China’s emissions had not been expected to overtake those from the US, formerly the world’s biggest polluter, for several years, although some reports predicted it could happen as early as next year.
But according to the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, soaring demand for coal to generate electricity and a surge in cement production have helped to push China’s recorded emissions for 2006 beyond those from the US already. It says China produced 6,200m tonnes of CO2 last year, compared with 5,800m tonnes from the US. Britain produced about 600m tonnes.
Of course, there are two things that are being missed in this whole global warming as caused by Man debate. First, China and the USA not only have a larger industrial base then most countries around the world, but are in fact much bigger countries. The United Kingdom is only about the size of Oregon. Of course it will have a lower CO2 output.
Second, and more important, is that throughout this whole silly debate about CO2, the disciples are completely ignoring the pollution aspect. CO2 is not that bad of a gas. It’s natural. We require it for life. It has been around longer then life has existed on this planet. What we need to focus our attentions on is actual pollution. Which is worse?
or
The second one surely has CO2 floating around. But it is not going to damage our lungs, cause sickness, and possibly even kill us.

Since the Guardian is a British newspaper I think they put that information in there for context. Not sure that this is something that has been “missed in this whole global warming as caused by Man debateâ€, but thanks for stating the obvious.

The CO2 produced by man is not natural and has a different chemical signature (i.e. different amounts of isotopes) – that’s how we can measure the contribution from natural vs. man-made CO2.

I agree pollution is a problem. What do you think should be done about it?

Oh, please, Silke. CO2 being different? I guess we can change water then, too, right?
As far as pollution goes, we should focus our efforts on real pollution, such as smog, urban blight, the nasty stuff that comes from car exhaust, and so on, rather then silly CO2.

Yes, the CO2 from the burning of fossil fuels has a different isotope. Atoms of the same element can have different numbers of neutrons and the different possible versions of each element are called isotopes. Did you read the link? It explains it much better than I can. And as for water, have you ever heard of heavy water?

Again, I agree we need to deal with pollution. How should we focus our efforts? What specifically do you think needs to be done?

I definently agree that pollution is poisonous and co2 is not, but in general, the things that cause pollution are also the things that cause excess co2. All paths lead to reducing our dependancies on foriegn oil and looking towards new and inovative alternative energies.
In regards to the China thing, per capita the US is by far the biggest contributor to global warming and pollution. The fact is China has such a huge population that it is quickly taking the lead for the most polluting country. In my opinion we cant use that as a scape goat to excuse ourselves from taking positive action. Just do what you can to stop global warming!
