Here’s how it goes
WASHINGTON – Closing the Guantanamo Bay prison is only a matter of time now, the White House says.
Under intense criticism at home and abroad, the Bush administration is working on plans to shut down the detainee facility for terror suspects in Cuba as soon as possible, and a consensus is building among top aides on how to do it, officials have told The Associated Press.
One proposal gaining support among Bush’s top national security advisers would have some of the most dangerous suspects at Guantanamo transferred to one or more Defense Department facilities, including the maximum-security military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and a Navy brig in South Carolina.
Perino said discussions on the matter are under way but declined to comment on specific suggestions.
Officials say the administration is split, with Vice President Dick Cheney’s office and the Justice Department vehemently opposed to any proposal that would bring detainees to U.S. soil, where they would be afforded more legal rights and might pose a threat.
The article suggests that the administration is under pressure because of all the legal challenges, some losses in court rulings, and liberals in Congress wanting it shut down. Add in all the other liberal groups who seem to care more about giving American Rights to terrorists then about protecting the American homeland, and keeping G’itmo open becomes difficult.
Is it worth the time and pain in the ass to keep fighting? In my opinion, no. Instead, why not move them elsewhere. I would suggest
- Howland Island
- Jarvis Island
- Palmyra Atoll
- Midway Atoll (Eastern island)
- or perhaps one of the 1,800 islands off the coast of Alaska
- one of the hotels Nancy Pelosi owns
- that property Harry Reid bought near Bull City, use the earmarked bridge money
- One of the Kennedy compounds
While I personally think that any Democrat Congress critter who has complained, along with the leaders of the ACLU, should host the G’itmo vacationers at their homes, one of the best bets is Palmyra Atoll. You take the terrorists, drop them off on the island, leave some food and tents, and say "have at it, nutjobs!" Leave a Navy ship off the coast in case of injury or hurricane, airdrop some food now and then. Hey, we’re not savages like they are. Have to offer some humanity.
According to the Wikipedia article,
Palmyra is an incorporated territory of the United States, meaning that it is subject to all provisions contained in the United States Constitution and is permanently under U.S. sovereignty. However, it is also an unorganized territory as there is no Congressional act specifying how it should be governed; the only relevant law simply gives the President the discretion to administer the island as he or she sees fit (see Section 48 of the Hawaii Omnibus Act, Pub. L. 86–624, July 12, 1960, 74 Stat. 411, attached as a note to former sections 491 to 636 of Title 48, United States Code)
Meaning that some of light loafer and pink shirt liberal crowd will be happy, yet the President can pretty much do as he wants.
But one of the Kennedy Compounds would work equally well.

It disappoints me that the President doesn’t tell them to all go to h*ll. He has nothing to lose at this point.
I just can’t think of what to say other than ‘idiots!’

Oh, and I vote for the Kennedy compound.
Yeah, I know what you mean. He needs to just tell the libs to go to hell.
I am sick to my stomach that the Bush #43 administration FAILED in capturing and convicting Islamomaniacs that took part in the savage murders of 2,996 innocent Americans and foreigners (120) in three states in three hours on 9-11-01! I guess supposed U.S. military tribunals ONLY hang German Nazis, eh? Way to go U.S. Pentagon
JAGS of injustice…that’s right – you only convict Nazis and U.S. Marines…I had forgotten this FACT! – Paper Lions 2007!
Will closing the base mean that President Bush has had a change of heart about the prisoners? Then why doesn’t he let them all go? And it doesn’t help him when a military investigator who served on a tribunal there says the tribunal wasn’t fair.
