We all should be using compact flourescent lightbulbs, right? They will help reduce man made global warming, right? Michelle Malkin noticed this the other day
You know the energy bill that Congress passed and President Bush signed into law today? Tucked into the legislation is a provision that mandates the phase-out of the 125-year-old incandescent bulb in the next four to 12 years in favor of a new generation of trendy, supposedly energy-efficient Gorebulbs.
Isn’t that wonderful? the Feds are going to require their usage. Sure, you will save some money, as long as you do not break them. (note: I actually used CFL’s in most of my lamps at home)
My point here is not run down CFLs. If you want to use them, go for it. Just do not think you are really accomplishing “doing your part to solve man made global warming.” Cause you aren’t.
Remember when Australia decreed that all incandescent bulbs were to be gone by 2010, replaced with CFLs? And that by doing that, it was like removing 800,000 metric tons of CO2 from the air. Sounds like quite a bit? Nope. It equates to a savings of 0.21% of all Australian emission. 0.0003 percent for the entire world.
In other words, as the climahysterics push these kinds of measures, they are basically pushing feel good measures that accomplish nothing. So go buy some carbon offsets! Oh, wait, they do not really do anything, either.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D.-Nev.) told Cybercast News Service Thursday that a provision in the new energy law that will effectively ban the use of the incandescent light bulb in the United States by 2020 was an appropriate exercise of federal power.
“Do you think it is the appropriate role of the federal government to effectively bar incandescent light bulbs in 2020 from American homes?” Cybercast News Service asked Reid. “Yes,” he said.
Isn’t the power of the federal government wonderful?

I guess that many people who also hold your views are still hoping to put the lead back in gasoline.
And let’s get rid of those pesky federally mandated seat belts. Lead in children’s toys ??? Let the market place take care of that, we don’t need no stinkin regulation
I, too, use CFLs almost exclusively for lighting (there are a very few applications where incandescents are still a tad better, like in the OVEN, for example. *heh*). I’m actually watching the availability/marketing of LED “bulbs” for home use. Because I’m cheap. Those darned LEDS already have lifespans that mean any such “bulbs” I do buy will probably outlast me (“And I bequeath to my Lovely Daughter and Son & Heir all of my LED ‘lightbulbs’… ” *heh*) and save me a bundle in electricity costs. Even more if I were to switch my lighting to DC. *feh*
But mandating CFL use is probably going to turn out to be like mandating the low water usage toilets in the short run. Always a bad idea when Central (Soviet-style) Planning is imposed on remote systems. Always.
Sen. Smith (R-NH) endorses Rep. Hunter for President.
This is good news for Rep. Duncan Hunter. To have one of the most Conservative senators (in New Hamphsire, no less!) endorse you is a big deal…
Pssst. I do not have permission to trackback to you again. Could it be because Haloscan is offline? They rot! (Only when they’re not working, though. lol)
Where does it stop, John? You liberals are always going on about the loss of civil liberties. The feds mandating every aspect of our lives sure looks like a violation, doesn’t it? If I want to be an idiot and not wear my seat belt while driving, I should be allowed to. And if I want to us a regular lightbulb, who is government to tell me otherwise, particularly when a. it will do nothing for so called global warming, and b. there is mercury in CFL’s?
I’m right with you, David. Like you, I do it for the cost savings, and I actually like the light from them. The daylight bulbs are awesome. But gov’t should not mandate it.
Geezuz John. Lead has been outlawed because IT’S POISONOUS!!! So are these bulbs. Your hatred of everything Teach says makes you incapable of acknowledging things that are simply common sense.
And I shouldn’t have said “outlawed”, because it’s not. There are products that still contain them, like ammunition. But in fuel and paint, the poison factor is why it was removed.
