Sickeningly Cute Story Of The Morning: Meet Orla

Because, quite frankly, this cold is kicking my butt, and I just do not have the brain power to think this morning, and, who doesn’t gow “awwwwwwww” when they see a baby otter? Plus, just a nice story

A postman who rescued a baby otter on a Scottish roadside took it on a 220-mile tour of the country in his mailbag.

orla the otterMr Wilson was travelling on the A7 road just north of Stow in the Borders in his 1999 Mini Cooper when he spotted Orla lying at the side of the road.

He explained: “She was frozen and I did not give her much of a chance to be honest.

“It looked as if she had either been abandoned or her mother had been hit by a car.”

Mr Wilson said the otter had come from the nearby Gala Water and “looked terrified from the noise of the cars and would soon have been hit”.

“I popped her into the mailbag I had in the car and carried on up the A7 and just kept hearing little squeaks and sucking noises to imply she was hungry,” he said.

“I stopped at Tesco at Dalkeith and bought some kitten milk and fed it through the tube of a ballpoint pen.

“She seemed happy enough and during our journey she kept crawling up my neck looking for more warmth.”

Orla is safe and doing well at the Arthurshiel centre near St Boswells in Roxburghshire.

I wonder how this will be blamed on global warming/climate change? :D

When RT and I were in Alaska a couple years ao, we loved watching the otters playing in the water. They’re fascinating creatures. We have a river running through our property here in TN – and RT saw some river otters last year and took a photo of them which I posted on my blog. They weren’t as cute as this guy, though.

OK that is the cutest picture I have ever seen.

I understand your frustration with the “global warming is to blame for everything” theme but the “nobody is blaming global warming in this story so I’ll bring it up and complain about it anyway” theme is also getting old.

  3. Otters are one of my favorite creatures, Carol. They are just fun to watch. One of my favorite things on National Geographic is the special “Otter Madness.”

It is cute, isn’t it, Silke? And, notice the smiley. That was a joke.

    OK, then I’ll say…

LOL! I thinK we need to send this picture to F You Penguin! They’ll have a hey day with it.
I love otters too, and am currently planning a trip to Scotland. Was reading about otters on the Isle of Mull! Hope we get a chance to see them! And I’m counting on some global warming for our trip- I hear Scotland is rather chilly!

  6. Sounds like fun, Trish. Always wanted to visit Scotland. Might have to think about using the massive PTO this year.

    Have fun on the trip!

We’ve been three times to Ireland, and are going back, have relatives there to visit, and all. But, thought we’d do a side trip first, have a Brit who works with me, and he has beautiful pictures of Scotland! Not as green as the Emerald Isle, but it looks interesting! Do a whisky tour as well…but not till October.
    Massive PTO? Lucky you!
