New Theme, New Plugin, Two Movies

OK, new theme time. What do you think? Seems to be working fine in IE and Firefox, some issues with the main index pages in Opera (not on single posts though.) I’ll work that later. So, like this one, or the previous one? I’ve got the old one live at my test site, for the moment, if you want to compare.

I’ve tried to use a more readable font, and made it so that the font changer works better and has a wider range. It will only affect writing in posts. The sidebar is wider then normal, allows for some interesting changes, and the sidebar graphic changes randomly between 5 different images.

As far as the plugin goes, if you have WP-2.7 and higher, you need WP-Optimize badly. The #1 reason is that it can clean up all those post revisions that build up, creating quite a bit of bytes in your SQL. It can also optimize your database. I am using it about once every week or two. Get it.

Movies. First one up, Marley and Me. If you haven’t seen this one yet, damn, excellent. The movie really captures the spirit of the book, which is about life. The laughter, the sadness, the triumphs, all bound together in the form of an uncontrollable dog and the family he is bound to. And, no matter how tough you are, be prepared to get choked up and leak some tears during the last 20 minutes or so. It is un-a-void-a-ble. Period. Deal with it. Enjoy a dog who had a great life, and definitely listen to the last little bit.

I usually do not like Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston movies, but, they did a great job bringing the real life characters to life. Go rent it. Give it an A.

The Day The Earth Stood Still. Ppppttttttfffffft! some spoilers below.

I am SO SO SO glad I did not see that piece of garbage in the movies. It started well, but, then, the space whateverthehellitis lands, and, at the least, knocks a bunch of people who happen to be hanging in the middle of Central Park in the night time who aren’t criminals (WTF?) including a mother with a baby, ass over teakettle.

OK, so, they are here because we are mean and nasty and destructive, and they come down like that? And now they are going to kill all humans and their civilization because we are mean and nasty and destructive and ruining the Earth, because there are only a few life supporting planets out there? Seem rather hypocritical, consider the little bio-engineered swarm of bugs they release are killing humans, and leaving a major mess which would screw with the biosphere, eh? Then, because one kid misses his dad who was in the Army and killed in a war, and step-mom (the ever hot Jennifer Connelly who appears fully clothed, not even a shot in her skivvies. WTF is up with that?) hugs the little crumb cruncher, the alien decides to save the Earth now because we can “change.” This wouldn’t even be a 50’s B monster movie. If you can rent it cheap, maybe. Otherwise, D.

Dude. I like. I really, really like.

Another movie with “space aliens” that really is worth waiting to come out on Netflix… “Knowing”. Starts out good, then quickly falls flat. Save your money for Star Trek, Terminator 4, and Wolverine…

I like it. Eventually I’ll change my site and blog. I hope.

Not much in this but something. Also have a wordpress blog and website.

  3. Thanks, Duncan. Been working slowly on it now and then for about a month. I play, then forget. Finally decided to finish it up. Raven has seen some of the not quite ready for prime time work when I was just starting. I had seen another great theme called Red Globe (http://amazingwordpressthemes.com/wordpress-themes/red-globe-101/), but, the sidebars load first, and cannot make them load last, much like with Andreas that y’all use.

I am psyched to see those movies too, especially Terminator 4.

Thanks, Mike. If you want any help with coding, here to help, no charge.

    Nice.
I’m used to the pic at the top to remind me what site I’m at.
Do you think you could sneak in a pirate hat wearing elephant with a flag in one of those pics on the side? Heh, or at least a flag. :)

  5. Raven says:

I like it! But I miss the pirate header! LOL It is a trademark for you.

I like the sidebars on one side too…wish Andreas could offer that option. I’m getting itchy for a new look too- it’s SO much work though.

I don’t see movies much as most of them are anti American or anti military.

Which smiley plugin are you using?

  6. How’s something like this with the pirate elephant in the header? Not too hokey, is it? I might do it with the real elephant from the previous banner, but, whew, tough shrinking down.

Do y’all like the rotating sidebar graphic, or, would you prefer one?

You are more then welcome to steal the coding and stuff for this one, if you like, Raven. Be easy to change the colors, and most of the other stuff for the main index and things are done. Would need a couple plugins, though.

I’m actually using two for grins. Sorta kinda remember why, but, they are custom smilies (http://goto8848.net/projects/custom-smilies/) and wp-grins (http://alexking.org/projects/wordpress). Have to scroll down a bit for the wp-grins.

Custom smiles lets me pick and choose, but, it doesn’t add them to comments, and with the current wp version, the box is all the way at the bottom. Wp-grins puts them on the comments page and right under the write a post area for easy access. There are actually several more smiles that I do not have active. With Custom Smilies you can choose which ones to activate. The old version let you choose to only show some in the commenting area, with the rest available for posting.

I’ve tried others, and they are way too much of a pain in the behind.

    The fix for custom smileys:
Add this text in the comments.php
    right before the comment form:

Worked for my site…and I don’t have WP Grins. Now I have to copy some of YOUR smileys though… :))

  8. Raven says:

    hmm…let me try THAT AGAIN….

  9. Raven says:

    Okay check your email.

  10. Will do. A fix is good.

I got a bunch of them from yahoo and msn emoticons pages. Sister Toldjah has a TON of cool ones, too.

  11. I like it, William — a LOT :-)

Also, I second your “must install and use” call for WP-Optimize…

  12. Thanks, GTL!

Using that plugin cut down a bit of slowness from the SQL.

  13. atxcowgirl says:

Love the elephant in the header. When I saw him that lifted my spirits. As for hokey, I connect him to your site, but someone who’s never been here might not get the connection.
As for the rotating sidebar graphic, Yes, definitely.

    • Thanks, atxcowgirl. I’ve kinda gotten used to the elephants up there. I don’t want to be TOOOOOO serious when blogging. This should be fun.
