Star Trek: The Review

As usual, I am not going to give a whole lot of details. There are about a billion reviews out on ye olde Interwebz. Just the basics.

Go see it. Worth the price of admission to the theater. At least a matinee viewing. I went to the 11:15am viewing at a theater in Raleigh, popcorn and a coke was my brunch (the parental units were coming down from NJ, eta around 4pm, so, didn’t want to be late.)

I’ll give it a B. There are two things that brought it down. First, the shaky camera work during action scenes that has become so prevelant in movies nowadays.

The other is below the break, and is a spoiler.

Still, excellent, fun movie that doesn’t get overly serious, and has the good old school ST flavor, upgraded with more modern tech. So the bad guy isn’t all that bad. That’s OK, because they don’t have to be all sorts of evil. The Wrath Of Khan is still the best, but this is a close 2nd. It was kinda like watch an old ST episode that was stretched to 2 hours.

I found it rather strange, and slightly distracting, that Star Fleet would call up Acadamy cadets and put them in positions of power. You have Uhura in charge of communications, Sulu at helm, and a 17 year old Chekov at navigation and doing wild things. Spock, who was barely a graduate, is a big man on ship, and gets promoted to “captain.” Kirk, who shouldn’t even be on the ship, gets promoted to 1st officer. What, they had no one lese in Star Fleet?

Then, at the end, after Kirk has been the acting captain, he gets to be The Captain of the Enterprise. Um, no, seriously?

And for those mega geek Treckies (I’m one,) don’t worry about the inconsistencies, such as Kirk’s father getting waxed in the beginning. If you’ve read the books (I used to digest them big time during the 80’s and 90’s) you know that Kirk’s father served on the original Enterprise with Chris Pike, and survived for a long time. But, what they did was create an alternative universe with the beginning, which allows them to really continue the series without having to do what has already been done.

  1. Phil says:

I liked the movie too. The oddest thing to me is the romance of Uhura and Spock.

  2. Yeah, that was kinda, um, unexpected. Kinda humanized Spock, though, in the books, he was trying really, really hard at that age to be more Vulcan then any other Vulcan.
