As the old blues song puts it, “It’s Cheaper to Keep Her.” That may sum up a divorce rate that’s been declining as the economy founders.
Marion County divorce filings are down about 20 percent from this time last year. Nationally, filings are down by as much as 50 percent.
Family law expert Drew Soshnick calls divorce a path to bankruptcy because splitting up also means splitting up debts. He also says people whose retirement savings have dwindled since last year are rethinking whether divorce is affordable.
No longer are they staying together for the children, but, because they do not want to be left with even more debt.
No worries, though, since the plans of Obama and the Congressional Dems will put everyone so far in debt soon that getting a divorce won’t matter in the short or long run.
