Oh, wait, they haven’t solved any of the problems, such as high unemployment, massive deficits, increasing health costs, threats of Islamic terrorism, etc and so on? Goodness! This must be super mega duper important, though: Congress weighs risks, benefits of killer whale and dolphin shows
A SeaWorld curator told Congress today that the theme park’s killer whale and dolphin shows educate and inspire children and should be continued despite the drowning of one of its trainers by a killer whale Feb. 24.
“I say the benefits outweigh the risk,” SeaWorld curator Julie Scardina testified before the House Subcommittee on Insular Affairs, Oceans and Wildlife on Tuesday.
Critics of such captive animal shows said the animal parks spread inaccurate information and seek to entertain, not educate.
Entertain? Shocker!
Naomi Rose, an orca biologist with the Humane Society of the United States, says education programs at animal parks, zoos and aquariums should be independently reviewed for accuracy.
“At the moment, there is no independent oversight of these programs,” Rose says. “There’s a great deal of scientific information missing from what people are told at SeaWorld about whales because it’s not in the best interest of SeaWorld’s commercial interests.”
In other words, a bunch of busy body nosy nellies are having hissy fits because the shows are entertaining, which is kinda the point at most of the shows.
