If there is any news of late that shows just what a joke and worthless body the United Nations is (and has been), this should do. I would hope that even liberals would make no attempt to defend the UN on this one
Without fanfare, the United Nations this week elected Iran to its Commission on the Status of Women, handing a four-year seat on the influential human rights body to a theocratic state in which stoning is enshrined in law and lashings are required for women judged “immodest.”
Just days after Iran abandoned a high-profile bid for a seat on the U.N. Human Rights Council, it began a covert campaign to claim a seat on the Commission on the Status of Women, which is “dedicated exclusively to gender equality and advancement of women,” according to its website.
Buried 2,000 words deep in a U.N. press release distributed Wednesday on the filling of “vacancies in subsidiary bodies,” was the stark announcement: Iran, along with representatives from 10 other nations, was “elected by acclamation,” meaning that no open vote was requested or required by any member states — including the United States.
A country that systematically abuses women (not too mention a good chunk of their population), and they get a seat on this council? Can we, finally, please kick the UN out of America already and stop giving them money? Oh, wait, I forgot, Obama’s UN representatives didn’t bother even asking for a vote on this. As Fausta writes, two days after Boobquake…..shame.
‘lil johnnie ryan coming along to Bitch, whine and moan about cruel Christians in three…… two……….. one and three-quarters…………….
So much for Hilary Clinton being the champion of women … and where is NOW?
Damn, they only pick on Republicans but oppressive muslim regimes are OK!
You know “otter” at least I have the jam to post under my real name. But how about this “Otter” the right USED to care a lot about abortion. Iran has very strict laws about abortion, as opposed to Israel which has state funded socialized abortion. Or the fact that in Jerusalem women have to ride in teh back of the bus, let orthodox Jewish men come in contact with women who are “unclean” during certain times of the month. Should we be more critical of our friends ( whom presumably we have some influence on) or are enemies ? Also let’s compare the role of women in Iran to say our good friends the Saudis or the Afghanis. Actually Iran has a rather enlightened policy towards women compared to other mid eastern nations, 60% of its college grads are women. Culture always trumps religion.
Otter I spent 6 months in Afghanistan and another 6 months in muslim SE Asia. How much personal experience have you had ?
You didn’t answer the question, ‘lil johnnie.
