OK, OK, everyone is entitled to have their say. This is America, after all, so, whatever she has to say must be super important, right?
Grammy Award-winning singer Shakira has joined the growing chorus of opposition to Arizona’s new immigration law.
Because that Grammy means quite a bit when it comes to American politics, giving her the base knowledge to discuss the issue which CNN misrepresents yet again.
Shakira met with leaders Thursday in Arizona Thursday before talking about the issue on CNN’s “AC 360.” She said some police and lawmakers in Arizona are worried about how the new law will be implemented.
“The mayor is very, very worried, as well as the chief of police here,” Shakira said. “They’re both very worried about the impact that implementation of this law will have on Latino families, the level of abuse that will be inflicted on Latinos, with or without papers.”
“I just met with some families and women who have been subjected to domestic violence, and they are so concerned,” the singer said. “They’re going to live in fear to call the police or to report a crime that has been inflicted to them. They’re trying to protect their kids and their own families from abusers. and now they’re going to have to protect themselves from the government.”
Or, they could go back to the country they came from, if they are illegals. Problem solved!
The Colombian singer said when she was in Arizona on Thursday, she thought about how the new law would affect her.
“If this law was already in effect today, for example, I could be detained and arrested and taken away because I don’t even have my driver’s license here. I ‘m completely undocumented here,” Shakira said.
Wait, Colombian singer? Oh, that’s right, Shakira is NOT an American citizen. She is Colombian born, and lives in the Bahamas. And if she’s undocumented, then she is in violation of the law that was put in place in the 1940’s. I’d mention what the laws are regarding immigration to Colombia, but, they are almost non-existent, since people are mostly leaving Colombia. The Bahamas? Citizens must be offered most jobs first. You must purchase a work permit. If you do not get one, you can be prosecuted. You must carry your papers with you at all times, even if just on vacation. If you want to become a permanent citizen, you must show your good character, ie, not a criminal, and prove that you have financial support, ie, you won’t become a ward of the state.
Anyhow, there is video from the singing chipmunk (that’s what she sounds like to me) at the link.

Shakira would no doubt be devastated to hear your opinion of her singing. She was really hoping to be able to appeal to 50 year old white guys.
And most Americans were brought up watching movies where it was the KGB and the Gestapo who who were the ones saying “Your papers please” I don’t recall Andy Griffinith ever asking for anybodies papers, maybe an occasional drivers license but always politely.
But Teach thanks for putting in Shakira’s comments about some of the children (US citizens) who may not be able to receive assistance from their government because their parent(s) are undocumented. There are an estimated 3 million children with American citizenship that have one or more in their family who are here without proper documents. Should we send the parents back and put the kids in orphanages ? Should these families be broken apart ?
Hey kids! Its the new drinking game starring the blatherings of John Ryan!
The rules are simple: Take a drink each time Ryan deflects from the post or makes a discredited claim!
Here we go!

Down one drink.

Down another drink.

Another one!

This is actually an interesting point. The answer is “should people profit from illegal activities?” Should thieves be able to keep stolen goods?
Ryan seems to be advocating that those who break the law should profit from it at the expense of those who do not break the law.
