Snap! Feds Tell Louisiana To Stop Dredging Sand To Create Barriers

First we had the little Coast Guard incident, where barges were held in port over lifejackets and fire extinguishers, now (via And So It Goes In Shreveport)

Federal authorities have ordered the state to stop dredging east of the Mississippi River, where sand from the bottom is being gathered to build barriers against the encroaching Gulf of Mexico oil spill, Gov. Bobby Jindal said.

Jindal and Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser said federal authorities want the state to move a dredging site farther from the Chandeleur Islands, a sensitive chain of barrier islands.

However, the Interior Department said the order was issued because the state was pumping sand from a sensitive section of the island chain and had failed to meet an extended deadline to install pipe that would tap sand from a less-endangered area.

Look, I’m all for conservation and protecting species, but, this is absurd, putting a nesting area over the needs of millions of people and, lets face it, even more coastal areas, so, more species could be harmed. To move the operation would take another five days, according to Gov. Jindal. Now, for Obama, 5 days might not seem too much, particularly since he is barely engaged, but, for real people, it means 5 more days of not Doing Something to reduce the oil impact.

As Pat at And So It Goes In Shreveport puts it

I’m trying to see both sides here; I’m trying to understand the “coastal scientists” who contend that the berms will “change tidal patterns” and lead to more long term erosion of the islands, but if the islands are killed off by the oil what difference does it make?  To borrow from Greta Perry’s analogy, if my house is on fire, what does it matter what room I try to extinguish first?  It’s all doing down.

More: TV station WDSU has video of Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser pleading to Obama to not allow the dredging to be stopped. Sorry, Billy, not sure if PeBO carries his Blackberry on the links.

One would suspect that you have a lot of experience with “doing things wrong,” but please explain how protecting the coast and the area is the wrong thing?

Or is it your contention that preventing and hindering the oil spill cleanup as the Feds are doing is a good thing?

  5. My pleasure, Pat. Great find.

    Right back at ya, Greta!

It’s called “an emergency”, John. A real emergency affecting people’s lives right now. Things need to get done now. Y’all on the left had no problem slamming things through before, like Stimulus.
