Friday Stupid: NY As Venice, Malaria In Europe

A hodge-podge of globull warming silliness this Friday morning, starting with

Malcolm Bowman, an oceanography professor from Stony Brook University in Long Island, recently stood at the snow-covered edge of the Williamsburg waterfront and pointed toward the Midtown skyline. “Looking at the city, with the setting sun behind the Williamsburg Bridge, it’s a sea of tranquility,” he said. “It’s hard to imagine the dangers lying ahead.”

He said that as climate change brings higher temperatures and more violent storms, flooding in parts of the city could become as routine as the heavy snows of this winter. We could even have “flood days,” the way we now have snow days, he said. Bowman and other experts say the only way to avoid that fate and keep the city dry is to follow the lead of the Dutch and build moveable modern dykes. Either that or retreat from the shoreline.

A handy dandy graphic is included with the breathless report, but, I like this unhinged one a bit more

Personally, I am against flooding of coastal cities, because that means the liberals will leave and ruin the suburbs.

Then we have this bit of alarmism

By 2080, parts of Western Europe could be susceptible to the spread of malaria for up to six months a year, according to new research.

The study mapped areas at risk of an outbreak, considering predicted climate change-driven rise in air temperature and data on the spread of malaria.

Globally, air temperature rose by 0.74°C between 1906 and 2005 and is projected to rise up to 6.4°C by 2099, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

You realize that, after a modest increase of a degree or two Fahrenheit since the end of the Little Ice Age, the chances of up to an 11.5F rise by the end of the century is completely ridiculous, right? Unless you are an alarmist. And, what’s that you say? They’ve had malaria in NW Germany before? Like, till the 1950’s, when mankind’s ingenuity wiped it out? Damn!

I thought I remembered hearing at one time that there are huge pumps under Manhattan island that are constantly working to keep the city from being flooded. I don’t recall if it is the subways or the city streets themselves. But if the power were out for a week or more the city would be underwater. I’ll have to go look now and see what I can find on that, but that sure isn’t from global warming.

Yeah, didn’t they actually have some flooding a few years ago during some bad storms that knocked out power? Didn’t they have to evacuate some people? I may be dreaming but that is being pulled from the recesses of my imagination. But then, that makes it true. (hey, it works for the alarmists)

Teach, I am inclined to believe that malaria will increase. With enviros ever vigilant to protect mosquitos from being killed by effective sprays and foggers, their numbers will continue to grow, thus killing more and more people.

But, you do make a good point for the alarmists Teach. “Stop global warming now or coastal lefties and socialists will be forced to live with you in your suburbs”

I was looking through my copy of Pendery’s World of Chiles & Spices catalog. They have a new item HIMALAYAN SALT.

These salt slabs and fine grain salt is
“…..hand mined from ancient sea salt deposits high in the Himalayan Mountains.”

WHAT? Are you telling me that the sea level was once “HIGH IN THE HIMALAYAN MOUNTAINS?”

Teach, quick, call Al Gore now cause not only is Manhattan going to be flooded, throw in those suburbs and 99% of America if we return to “ancient sea salt deposit” levels!

While I take your point about the liberals escaping to the suburbs, I still maintain that a few gondolas and these seacoast cities will be as right as the mail. So the remaining unsolved problem is the threat newly submerged islands will pose to oil tankers. We must act now to remove this looming threat that mid ocean islands will cause due to sea level rise. Removing the top 100 feet or so of these islands with explosives would be much more economical than cap and trade.

Just to let you know. Malaria is carried by a specific type of mosquito. That mosquito is previlent in the US and Europe. The only difference between the US and Europe and malaria bearing countries is the host. We don’t have enough people with malaria to pass it from one to another. Of course, DDT would take care of the situation now, but the liberals will not allow it, even though malaria is killing millions every year. Now why don’t we have DDT? Because Buck wrote a book of fiction in the 60’s that got everyone of the liberals in a tit and they banded the substance, just like what is going on with the climate change now, only there was never anything real about the DDT concerns.
