I have to tell you, it’s stories like these which may turn me back into a Warmist….oh, you didn’t know that prior to 2003, I was a True Believer? Well, yes, I was, and stories like these make me very worried about the future if climate change continues to happen. Starting off with Discovery News: Climate Change Caused Angry Runts

Climate changes resulted in war and famine in preindustrial Europe. A century long drop in temperature even led to shorter people in the 16th century.

Chinese researchers recently looked at every known major conflict and crisis in Europe and correlated them to 14 economic, social, agricultural, ecological, and demographic variables.

“Our findings indicate that climate change was the ultimate cause, and climate-driven economic downturn was the direct cause, of large-scale human crises in preindustrial Europe and the Northern Hemisphere,” said the researchers, led by David Zhang of the University of Hong Kong in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Between 1500 and 1800, every change in average temperatures correlated to a change in agricultural output and food supply. The climate changes did not result in immediate changes in population growth, so even in a cold year with poor harvests, the population kept going up. More mouths to feed with less grain meant a rise in food prices and starvation.

Hungry people then either revolted, migrated, or starved. On a larger scale this meant war, plague, or malnutrition. But the disastrous effects of climate changes weren’t instantaneous.

And, it even made people shorter! This is so terrible! All the war, famine, pestilence, plague, revolution, dude, this was so bad for Mankind!

“Our findings have important implications for industrial and postindustrial societies,” concluded the researchers. “Any natural or social factor that causes large resource (supply) depletion, such as climate and environmental change, overpopulation, overconsumption, or nonequitable distribution of resources, may lead to a general crisis.”

See? Climate change is Bad!

Over to Time Magazine: Climate Change Caused Crises Half A Millennium Ago, Too

Al Gore’s televised, 24-hour PowerPoint extravaganza last month predictably sparked some hot debate – much of it not about the science itself, but about Gore as its mouthpiece (common themes: he’s a hero, he’s become irrelevant, he’s a hypocritical capitalist). But a key message within Gore’s Climate Reality Project was that our recent strange weather and accompanying social problemsare inextricably linked to the climate crisis. And say what you will about Gore, that part seems increasingly true. What’s more, there’s nothing new about such cause-and-effect. According to a new study, climate change has played a significant role in several of the crises of pre-industrial Europe and the rest of the Northern Hemisphere over the course of the 300 years.

A team led by David Zhang of the University of Hong Kong collected as much data as they could find about climate, demography, agro-ecology, and the economy from the years 1500 to 1800 in Europe and found that these variables yo-yoed up and down along with the weather. The investigators used a number of criteria to confirm that the relationship was causative and not merely associative: there had to be a strong and, importantly, consistent relationship between variable and effect; the cause had to precede the outcome; and the researchers had to be able to predict the effect based on the cause. To make all these connections, Zhang’s team used robust correlation and regression models as well as simulations of alternating periods of harmony and crisis in the areas for the earlier periods in which data wasn’t as easily available.

They found that sh*t got really, really bad during those years, because of climate change!

“Peaks of social disturbance such as rebellions, revolutions, and political reforms followed every decline of temperature, with a one- to 15-year time lag,” the scientists wrote, adding that many such disturbances escalated into armed conflicts. “The number of wars increased by 41% in the Cold Phase.”

And because of all this, I might have to become a Warmist again, and campaign against climate change, advocate for carbon restrictions on Big Oil and Big Coal, and spread awareness……..what? I’m reading the stories wrong? They say that cooling periods really, truly suck? They make things really bad? The weather is horrible, and it is hard to grow food? That things tend to be better during warm periods? Let’s go back to the Discovery article

Climate changes influenced the good times as well. The Renaissance may have been a result of more hospitable temperatures.

“The alternation of historical golden and dark ages in Europe and the NH (Northern Hemisphere), which often was attributable to sociopolitical factors, was indeed rooted in climate change,” the researchers wrote.

That comes after discussing the cold period from 1559-1662, when average heights shrank .8 inches, and they had the 30 Years War. So, when it is warmer, things are better. When it is cooler, bad mojo. Perhaps the Warmists know this, which is why the agitate for all sorts of globull warming legislation, but, never actually do anything in their own lives.
