I’m thinking about using the Disqus system, which will save some bandwith and storage space. What are your thoughts on this? You’re the ones who comment, let me know.

Okay, I’ll bite….
How will it save storage space and bandwidth?
I am neither for or opposed to the move as long as we don’t have to register to comment.
I hate that with a passion.
It’s your blog and you should do what you want. :)
The comments are stored offsite, saving some storage space. Bandwith can be saved because there is no need to reload the page, among others.
One doesn’t have to register, can also use other means, such as Twitter, Facebook, which I already use now. Or, can post as guest. But, a popup box comes up to enter info.
I use the regular WordPress commenting feature on my site, and it works just fine. Actually, I think that the WordPress commenting feature works far more easily than Discus or the system you are using now, or the standard Blogger.com commenting system. Your system uses WordPress; why not just enable that?
But, whatever you do, you have to retain the expanded emoticons!
I switched my little place over William, spam is almost non existent now, and most of the places I frequent and comment at are using it too.
I use the Akismet anti-spam plug-in for WordPress — it’s free — and almost no spam gets through. I don’t know if it is because I use teh WordPress commenting feature, but I do get a lot of spam attempts, a couple hundred a day, but Akismet stops virtually all of them.
I also have an automatic setting which closes comments on a thread after 14 days, and I can set up any individual article to not have comments or trackbacks open at any time.
As for saving bandwidth, while you can’t see them all, there are four separate sites on my account, with virtually unlimited bandwidth. One site has 84,000+ comments on it, while my current site, just started four months ago, has several thousand, and it’s all less than $100 per year. I use bluehost.com as my site server.
Are you referring to the standard WordPress system, where the comments are hosted internally, Dana, or something else?
However, Disqus seems to interfere with a few of the commenting plugins I use, as well as the popup comments box, so, pretty much going to nix this thought.
Our esteemed host asked:
The former. It works pretty well for me: I always have access, and because I have virtually unlimited bandwidth, the internal hosting storage is not an issue.
why would anyone use a round shaped flat object for commenting?
I use the standard WordPress with a couple of plugins – one for a preview window that allows people to see their comments and edit them for a certain time, and another that is a captcha thing.
I hate captcha myself, but even with Akismet plugins for spam, I was getting hit way too often for my liking by spambots.
At this moment, I am happy with what I have.
(Just in case you were wondering.)
Not so much worried about spam, was more about storage.
I use akismet, also Bad Behavior. A great plugin is Ban Hammer for blocking spammers and post thieves. I have another for RSS thieves.
One of these days, we need to have a discussion on what plugins people are using and why.
:)
Actually, if you take a look up near the top right below the tag line, I have a Page which highlights most of my plugins, though not all. Haven’t updated in a while.
Wait.. I’m not seeing where it says Racist Misogynist Bastard
When I started ROH, I looked at that list, and saw that you had changed a lot of the plugins or hadn’t updated the list for awhile.
That is why I suggested the discussion. :)
Things change over time.
Well, you got me to update it. Lots has changed over the past few years. The one thing I’ve tried to stay away from is gimicky types, they often use too much bandwidth and can cause loading problems.
I didn’t mean for you to do more work.
I just wanted you to know that when I stated ROH, I did look at your list and how the plugins you use might apply to my little corner of the blog-o-sphere.
I absolutely agree with you on the “gimmicky” stuff. I use graphics for the blogroll, but that is a personnel choice. I also have a countdown timer to the election, but that is just something to remind me that things will get better. ;)
Thanks for all you do though.
I needed to update it, glad you brought it up. That list is as much for me, in case things crash and I need to replace. Some of the plugins I almost can’t dump, because things would go goofy.
I know what you mean.
I have a plugin that has stopped working and I really like it. I can’t find the time to fix it though.
Ah, the fun of blogging. :)
