Don’t misunderstand, I’m not defending Zimmerman. Nor am I going to defend Trayvon. What we need are facts, rather than frontier justice ending with a lynch mob
(Orlando Sentinal) With a single punch, Trayvon Martin decked the Neighborhood Watch volunteer who eventually shot and killed the unarmed 17-year-old, then Trayvon climbed on top of George Zimmerman and slammed his head into the sidewalk several times, leaving him bloody and battered, authorities have revealed to the Orlando Sentinel.
That is the account Zimmerman gave police, and much of it has been corroborated by witnesses, authorities say.
Zimmerman has not spoken publicly about what happened, but that night, Feb. 26, and in later meetings he described and re-enacted for police what he says happened.
In his version of events, he had turned around and was walking back to his SUV when Trayvon approached him from behind, the two exchanged words then Trayvon punched him in the nose, sending him to the ground, and began beating him.
If the facts turn out that Zimmerman was the aggressor, and shot Trayvon in cold blood, he should be locked up for life. But, what if the facts turn out that Zimmerman was attacked? Shouldn’t we have all the facts before a rush to scalp collecting? We are a nation of law, not a nation of Men. Let the Grand Jury get the facts before putting out death threats.
We had the head of the local NAACP Chapter on our radio show the other day and while he appeared to be a nice enough fellow, he kept sticking to a narrative that leaves one to wonder if is interested in truth.
For example, he kept calling Martin a “child,” a term that conjures the mental image of a pre-teen instead of a 6’2″ – 6’3″ 180 pound football player.
He brought up the fact that Martin was tested for drugs and alcohol while Zimmerman was not. This is standard procedure for a death under circumstances that are not “natural.” The deceased is always tested. Zimmerman could only be tested if the officers had probable cause to suspect he was impaired and there is no evidence of that.
It went on and on. We would make points and statements he would agree with, and then he’d turn around and make a statement that contradicted those points.
It is frustrating because there are many (including the Black Panthers who have offered a reward of $10,000 for Zimmerman to be “captured”) who aren’t interested in the truth of the matter.
Any statement contrary to the narrative in which they believe is met with charges of “racism.”
I keep thinking what would have happened if both men had approached each other and tried to view the situation through the eyes of the other. Would there be a dead body? I don’t think so.
At the same time, I keep thinking that if the roles were reversed – if Zimmerman was walking down the street to enter the community and was approached by neighborhood watchman Martin – how many people would be crying for Martin to be indicted?
Probably a lot.
You are right that the truth needs to confront the lies and false beliefs of others, and at the same time, let the investigation and grand jury complete their work.
I have a feeling the media knows more about the situation then they are letting on. There were far fewer breathless stories today, and coverage was barely a mention on media front pages. Perhaps they realize that they aren’t helping, and if something happens to Zimmerman, this will look bad for Obama, Democrats, and their moonbat supporters who really seem to care less about Trayvon, law, and truth than they do about community agitation and stoking the same old tensions.
There is a report out of Miami where Martin was staying at the community because he was suspended for possession of an empty bag oi marijuana. (It must have tested for residue.)
He was also suspended for graffiti and having a screwdriver at school earlier in the year.
While these incidents don’t matter to what happened that horrible night, it does strip away the perception that Martin was an “innocent child.”
In as much as Zimmerman has been demonized for his run in with police which resulted in the charges of “resisting arrest with force” (later dropped) the “humanization” of Martin must be looked at as well.
When we do that, neither man is perfect.
You should know by now, that these days of Democrats, truth matters not.
Lies are truth and they are easier to believe. Why find the truth, when money and power can be had by pushing lies and violence. Lies control. Truth releases.
If Zimmerman did it, he should get everything he deserves, but, two points:
1. if he did do it, it’ll be interesting to see the Left call for capital punishment, something they supposedly abhor.
2. I have a feeling that when all is said and done, they are going to look foolish, just like in so many other cases where they go ape, like the Duke Lacrosse case, for instance, then are proven 100% wrong.
