In all fairness they do have some grounds for complaint
(WRAL) An Asian student group at Duke University has filed a formal complaint with the school after a fraternity hosted a weekend party with a theme that some consider racist.
The party put on Friday by Kappa Sigma originally had an Asian theme, but it was changed to “international relations” after some students complained, according to Larry Moneta, vice president of Student Affairs.
However, pictures posted online show party-goers wearing Asian-style clothing, including a conical straw hat, and a party invite with the salutation, “Herro Nice Duke Peopre.”
Is that racist? More along the lines of bigotry and plain ass-hattery. Some people have less common sense than a dog, and I’m certainly not going to defend the actions of this Kappa Sigma chapter, which really should have known better. But, consider:
The Asian Student Association has the support of several other campus student groups, including the Black Student Alliance, the Center for Race Relations and the National Pan-Hellenic Council.
These are all campus groups that are based on “race” to the exclusion of others. Think about the response if someone started a WASP Alliance group: how would that play out?
Sigma Kappa gave a weasely apology, and there will be a demonstration today at 1pm by a group thatvis racially exclusive.
Teach are you in fact SURE that these groups are racially exclusive? I am pretty sure that the Asian Student Association is NOT racially exclusive.
What is the name of the group(s), John?
BTW, Sigma Kappa national suspended the fraternity pending the outcome of the investigation. Which is the right thing to do.
If the Kappa Sigma Fraternity were not primarily Caucasian, would there have been a complaint?
