Arctic Melts? Global Warming. Antarctic Freezes? Global Warming

Listening to Rush Limbaugh briefly while taking a post-gym shower, he mentioned the Freedomworks free ebook, Rules for Patriots, and how part of it is about telling stories, much like the Left does. One correction of Rush, they don’t tell stories, they tell fables. Like this from Warmist Guy Williams

(The Australian) “It’s a common myth and should be dispelled: that if sea ice disappears one season in the Arctic it magically reappears in the next season in the Antarctic. That couldn’t be further from the truth. They are two completely different (climate) systems, responding to (global) warming in different ways.”

Via Tim Blair, who notes “So if the ice vanishes, it’s due to global warming. And if it increases, it’s also due to global warming. Interesting.”

BTW, the quote came in an article that noted

WINTER sea ice cover in the Antarctic has grown to its largest extent since satellite records began in the late 1970s, defying most climate models and muddying the waters of the global warming debate.

The latest data from NASA’s satellites shows the winter sea ice cover around the frozen continent reached a record 19.47 million sq km last month. That beats last winter’s 19.44 million sq km — itself a record.

According to NASA, it is 3.6 per cent higher than the average maximum between 1981 and 2010, with the sea ice cover in Antarctica growing at 1.5 per cent a decade.

It couldn’t possibly be natural variation, right?

Um, NO. NO it is not. No one believes this. We talk about it. But it is in no way a “strange” belief system that only science can dispel.

Wow. Global warming does create more ice!! Who knew the CAGWers had science on their side. (yes, that’s sarcasm. They dont.)

So, are we now going to have 2013 as the new extent in order to include this year in the new average? (yes, that was sarcasm too)

Where in the linked article did a climate scientist claim the small increase in Antarctic ice resulted from global warming? Since 1979, Arctic sea ice extent has decreased 30% and Antarctic sea ice extent has increased less than 4%.

  4. gitarcarver says:

Math is not your strong point, is it Jeffery?

The mass of arctic ice is much less than that of the antarctic which will affect the percentages.

To illustrate, if a farmer sells 50% of his 100 acre farm, he sells 50 acres. However, if the 50 acres are bought by a farmer with a 200 acre farm, his property has increased only by 25%.

Giving percentages when comparing unequal items in inherently dishonest.

But honesty is not a big priority in liberal leftists like you.

    gitar,

I’m stronger at arithmetic than you are at reading or writing. Where did the article attribute Antarctic ice to global warming?

You’re being vague and imprecise in your language about sea ice. The article discussed “extent” (area) and not “mass”. There is an immense mass of ice on the continent of Antarctica, in fact, most of the fresh water of Earth is frozen there. The mass of this ice is steadily decreasing. On the other hand the winter sea ice around Antarctica is not decreasing but is increasing slightly (1% per decade). The extent of Arctic ice is greater than Antarctic ice in summer, but less than Antarctic in winter.

Apology accepted, although I will spare you the embarrassment of having to admit you were wrong.

I am sure that I write and comprhend above a scond grade level, Jeffery.

You’re being vague and imprecise in your language about sea ice.

“Sea ice” was the term you introduced into this conversation Skippy. If there is an imprecision, it is there because you brought it into the thread.

However, the imprecision of your own term does not address or excuse the fact that you made a statement that was deliberately misleading.

Apology accepted, although I will spare you the embarrassment of having to admit you were wrong.

Wow. You’re accepting my apology for your being wrong?

How magnanimous of you. I didn’t remember saying “I am sorry that you don’t understand basic math,” but hey, if you want to agree to that premise, I am god with that.

(Of course, since I never made that apology to you, for you to question the reading and comprehension skills of others is laughable.)

Oh, and by the way, I guess you watched “60 Minutes” tonight and saw their report on how Benghazi was a scandal and how the administration has continually lied about it?

This would be the Benghazi where just a few days ago you arrogantly dismissed the lives of four men who were allowed to die by the administration and then the administration lied again to cover up what had happened.

Lying to you is not an issue or a scandal or any type of moral failing.

It is normal in your life.

I hate to tell you this but you not only don’t have the intellectual high ground here, you don’t have the moral high ground either.

(And btw – give up that patent right yet?)

Ummm.. J, the whole article is trying to place blame of global events upon the mantle of “global warming”. hence this comment as shown above if you had read it:

WINTER sea ice cover in the Antarctic has grown to its largest extent since satellite records began in the late 1970s, defying most climate models and muddying the waters of the global warming debate.

    You wrote:

So, the “mass” of the ice on Antarctica is shrinking, but the amount of “winter ice” is increasing? Is that what you’re going with?
And if you are, then please provide proof that links CO2 molecule to a loss of an ice crystal… oh wait, but then you said there was in fact more ice created elsewhere. Weird.. so CO2 can create and destroy ice at the same time?

The extent of Arctic ice is greater than Antarctic ice in summer, but less than Antarctic in winter.

Not sure your point, but if you want to highlight that the seasons are opposite on the opposite poles, then we can all agree on that.

The mass of this [Antarctica] ice is steadily decreasing.

Please provide proof of that for the whole continent of Antarctica, and not just the small western peninsula.

  9. Jeffery says:

    Gumballs,

Please understand that actual scientists understand that the Earth is warming rapidly so all major climate effects have to be understood in that context. But that is not the same as saying that CO2 is responsible for making ice.

I didn’t say “winter ice” did I? I said “winter sea ice”. You see, I was being specific and careful in what I said because words matter. Why did you truncate my actual words and snarkily ask if that was “what I was going with”?

In the Antarctic summer, sea ice disappears. In the Arctic summer, the sea ice does not disappear (yet). In the Antarctic winter the extent (area) of Antarctic sea ice is greater than Arctic ice extent during its winter.

I’ll play along, although I would expect a group of climate experts like the august group here to be familiar with the basic data.

Antarctic land ice mass loss see: http://www.sciencemag.org/content/338/6111/1183 and http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v491/n7425/full/nature11621.html.

For increasing Antarctic sea ice see: http://www.nature.com/ngeo/journal/v6/n5/full/ngeo1767.html

I’m always amazed and a little saddened when I see arrogance combined with ignorance. (see jimhoft).

  10. Jeffery says:

    gitar,

    Benghazi!!

And that has what to do with Antarctic sea ice?

    Patents!!

    Same query.

If you’re actually interested in how our patent system works let me know.

(But dude, you’ve kinda jumped the shark here)

  11. gitarcarver says:

And that has what to do with Antarctic sea ice?

I didn’t realize that you, on someone elses blog, were defining the conversation.

Typical leftist who thinks they own other people’s property.

You know what this all has to do with anything you discuss. It has to deal with credibility.

Without a shred of decency in your body, you disrespected the men who needlessly gave their lives and their families to this day are waiting for the truth from the administration.

As I have said many times, your complaining about the patent system when you have a chance to give up your patent from which you have made money shows that you are hypocrite.

I am sorry that when you look in the mirror you see morally and ethically bankrupt individual, but the mirror won’t change.

  12. Son_of_Gumballs says:

Please understand that actual scientists understand that the Earth is warming rapidly so all major climate effects have to be understood in that context.

Really? you’re the one jumping the shark here. Only radical hysterical Socialist nutjobs believe that the Earth is “warming rapidly” despite the evidence to the contrary.

In the Antarctic summer, sea ice disappears. In the Arctic summer, the sea ice does not disappear

Probably because they are two completely different ecosystems and will react to the different realities between ocean and land differently. You can not expect ice to behave the same over ocean as it does over land. “Actual scientists” know this.

In the Antarctic winter the extent (area) of Antarctic sea ice is greater than Arctic ice extent during its winter.

and watermelons are larger than eggs. So what? Again, apples and potatos here.

I’m always amazed and a little saddened when I see arrogance combined with ignorance. (see jimhoft).

And I’ve never encountered a larger bastard in my life. And that includes many trolls, jerks, school bullies, and politicians.

  13. Please understand that actual scientists understand that the Earth is warming rapidly so all major climate effects have to be understood in that context.

Except that 0.14F since 1997 and 0.28F since 1990 isn’t exactly anything of note. And even if it was, that doesn’t prove anthropogenic causation.
