Have these monuments actually killed anyone?
(AP) Vandals have targeted monuments dedicated to the leaders and soldiers of the Confederacy, painting the slogan “Black lives matter” on memorials in a half-dozen states where the landmarks stand tall in parks and outside government buildings.
The graffiti reflects the racial tension that permeates post-Ferguson America, more than a week after a white man was accused of shooting and killing nine black congregants at a Charleston, South Carolina, church.
Michael Allen, a lecturer in American culture studies at Washington University in St. Louis, compared the vandalism to the toppling of statues in Russia at the end of the Soviet empire.
“If the monuments are strong statements of past values, defacing them is the easiest and loudest way to rebuke those statements,” Allen said.
So, crime to make a statement. As for post-Ferguson, it’s a movement based on a lie (there was no “hands up don’t shoot” moment), provided by a teen who had just robbed a store, was a moron for walking in the middle of the street, then assaulted a duly sworn officer of the law, and attempted to take his gun, then came back for more.
One of the defaced monuments was the Confederate Memorial in St. Louis’ Forest Park, 10 miles from Ferguson. The same graffiti was reported on memorials in Charleston; Baltimore; Austin, Texas; Asheville, North Carolina; and Richmond, Virginia. No arrests have been made.
Meanwhile, Baltimore has seen 10 homicides in the last 13 days, of which the majority of victims have been Black. There are also plenty of murders in St. Louis county this year. If the pattern holds, the majority of Blacks killed in the U.S. will have been killed by other Blacks, known as “Black in origin” crime. Where’s the concern with these #BlackLivesMatters adherents to all the violence, all the murders, all the rapes, all the assaults, all the property crimes, occurring within the Black community against other Blacks? Why are they not doing something to resolve the heavy violence within their own community? This isn’t being caused by a few old Confederate monuments.
But, hey, someone was Offended.
Another symbolic waste of time from the Republican House. How many votes that they take on repealing the ACA? 50?
Governance. Try it.
The US pays nearly twice as much per person on healthcare as other advanced nations. Earlier, underwriting in the private markets refused to cover the sick and the elderly so government had to step in. Years ago the Dems and Repubs could have gotten together and devised a universal healthcare system but Republicans preferred the old system where private insurance profited from covering the healthy and government filled the gap of the market failure. The US pays nearly twice as much per person on healthcare as other advanced nations.
Teach why aren’t you fojng anything to stop violence in black areas?
Why aren’t you trying to mento or be a big brother?
You act just like those “warmists” thst you are talking about who demand change in the lifestyle of others but who personally do little to help the problem
Exactly why do we even have memorials to the traitors that tried and failed to break up the United States of America
I also do not consider slavery to have been a “states rights issue”
The Baltimore autopsy concludes the guy was wasted, tried to get up, swooned, and cracked his head.
PS I see the trolls are here, too.
Tell the idiot that they weren’t traitors and had every right to secede.
He probably thinks same sex marriage had nothing to do with states, either.
fromwiz typed:
That’s great news. Can you supply a link to that information? The lamestream media are still reporting he broke his upper back in the police van.
The autopsy says no such thing.
The autopsy has not been released and the Baltimore Sun which obtained a copy of the report has only released portions of it
The portions released say that Gray had opiates and cannabinoid in his urine. There are no levels cited and given opiates and cannibinoid stay in the system, there is no reason at this point to say he was “wasted.”
Secondly, the report concluded that Gray may have tried to stand up and was thrown against the van because of sudden acceleration, deceleration or turns. There is no mention that he “swooned.”
The concluding paragraph explains why this was a homicide:
Based on the sequence of events and the described progressive alteration of mental and physical status, Mr. Gray’s neck injury occurred while in custody, in and during transport in the police van. Safety equipment was available but not used. Therefore, it was not an unforeseen event (a medico-legal definition of an accident) that a vulnerable individual was injured during operation of the vehicle, and that without prompt medical attention, the injury would prove fatal. Due to the failure of following established safety procedures through acts of omission, the manner of death is best certified as Homicide.
The safety equipment that was not used was mandated to be used by the police department a mere 9 days for Gray was arrested.
Gray was not a saint, but there is no justification for the way he was treated by the police who did not secure him, placed him in an awkward and vulnerable position within the van and then ignored his pleas for help.
We treat stray cats and dogs that are picked up off the streets better than Gray was treated.
john,
Why don’t you ask the British?
Yeah. Those damned people who thought that they could leave one country and form their own. How dare Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Hamilton, Adams et al think that way!
That you think that way will solidify the belief of many that it was a states rights issue as you have shown a regular ability to be wrong on laws, history and facts. There is no reason to believe your conclusions on an issue is any more reliable as your belief that there is a Starbucks in Selma or that Liberty University discriminates against atheists.
But since you do not believe it was a states rights issue, perhaps you can show us all in the Constitution where the Federal government could have jurisdiction over the slavery issue in states? When you can’t find it, then read the 10th amendment and get back to us.
I doubt that you will.
(To be clear, the American Civil War was and remains a complex issue that too many times is broken down into simple positions that are not as truthful or nuanced as understood by the people of that era. This is not to defend slavery but to try and put some context on the issue.)
Black churches are bursting into flames across the confederacy!
On Monday, someone set fire to College Hills Seventh Day Adventist Church in Tennessee, according to local WATE. The arsonist placed bales of hay outside the church doors and lit them ablaze, fire officials told the station. They also burned the church van.
On Tuesday, God’s Power Church of Christ in Georgia was intentionally set on fire, authorities told ABC News. Electronics and other equipment were also stolen in the early morning fire. Authorities told reporters there is “no evidence†of a hate crime.
On Wednesday, Briar Creek Baptist Church in North Carolina burned in the middle of the night, causing $250,000 in damage, NBC News reports. Authorities are investigating whether the intentional blaze was a hate crime. It took 75 firefighters to bring it under control.
On Friday, Glover Grove Missionary Baptist Church in South Carolina, was virtually destroyed in an overnight blaze, the Aiken Standard reports. While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, the FBI has been called in.
Perhaps because the US and the British have become best friends, whereas the South is still an enemy of the US.
Thanks Jeffery.
If there was ever a statement that shows your ignorance of history, that is it.
I am not surprised.
You’re welcome.
