I absolutely agree: that petroleum-based road is evil, evil, evil! and the only proper response is to build all roads out of concrete!
Dana is partly right — asphalt is evil fossil fuel based. Why don’t we hear the climastrologers wanting dirt roads to walk on? (concrete takes a lot of heat to make the lime and power to mine the lime stone. ) Without fossil fueled vehicles, there is no need for paved roads.
Ahhh, but modern ready-mixed concrete producers include flyash or ground granulated blast furnace slag in their mixes, both of which are waste byproducts from other industries; we can actually sell carbon credits to other industries because of the use of pozzolans. :)
Of course, selling carbon credits actually increases CO2 emissions, since the industries which buy them are doing so because it’s less expensive than adding equipment to scrub out the CO2 . . . .
