Trump , the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, vows to deport millions of undocumented immigrants, choke off legal immigration and bar all refugees from war-torn Syria. His gut called for closing the door to all Muslims.
George Washington wrote:
“The bosom of America is open to receive not only the Opulent and respected Stranger, but the oppressed and persecuted of all Nations and Religions; whom we shall welcome to a participation of all our rights and privileges.â€
Of course, Washington was talking about people coming to the national legally, people who would then become part of our great melting pot (a phrase coined much later). We are a generous nation. What we do not want are people coming to our shores illegally or overstaying their visas. Nor do we want the illegals and legals to come here and demand that we change for them, that they get to practice their own laws and we must conform to their laws and mores.
Trump rouses supporters by railing that powerful forces have crippled America while proclaiming that he alone can restore the nation’s lost glory: “I will give you everything. I will give you what you’ve been looking for 50 years. I am the only one.â€
Of course, Bernie and Hillary, along with so much of the Democratic Party, do the same, railing against Wall Street, the moneyed class, industry, and so forth.
Trump , in a combination that would drive the U.S. far deeper into debt, pledges to dramatically hike spending on the military, Social Security and Medicare while slashing taxes by huge sums.

Trump struts, preens, beats his chest and, with unshakable faith that he is right, proclaims mightiness from bedroom to the boardroom, while insulting and demeaning those who are different from him, those who are disabled, those who disagree with his policies, and, most of all, those who question his greatness.

Putin has supported financially and political all the über rightwing parties in Europe and is salivating over a divided Europe filled with weak nationalistic countries and a weakened NATO. If Putin supports them, shouldn’t we have some concerns?

During President Washington’s time, all immigration was legal immigration. Other than a short-lived restriction on Chinese immigration late in the 19th century, our restrictions on immigration really date from the early 20th century.
That said, President Washington was a slave-owner, and thus supported the immigration of “the oppressed and persecuted,” even if they didn’t particularly want to come to our shores.
There are many things that the Framers didn’t foresee, and to them, immigration meant white, western, Protestant Europeans.

The largest deficit actually signed into law by President Bush was the FY2008 appropriation, which came in at $408 billion. Mr Bush submitted an FY2009 budget, and, had the Congress done as it should have, President Bush would have signed those appropriations into law as well, but the Democrats knew that they’d get more spending under Barack Hussein Obama, and chose to fund the government via continuing resolution to start FY2009. The Omnibus Appropriations Act of 2009, along with the porkulus bill, were both signed into law by President Obama, sending the FY2009 deficit to well over $1 trillion, $1.4 trillion if I remember correctly.
The latest deficits are well under a trillion, but they are all still higher than any which occurred under President Bush.
