Spike in immigration arrests are arresting the economy
The Trump administration is arresting more people who are in the United States illegally, and that crackdown appears to be stemming the flow of immigrants entering illegally across the southern border. With the rising arrests President Trump is fulfilling a campaign promise, but he may also be undercutting his ability to fulfill his other pledge to increase the annual growth of the economy from 2 percent to 3 percent or more.
The arrests of immigrants here illegally have risen by nearly 40 percent in the first 100 days of President Donald Trump’s term as compared to the same period in 2016, according to the office of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The uptick comes in the wake of an executive order signed by Trump increasing border security. While the Trump administration says it’s focusing on removing criminals, only 2,700 of the 41,300 arrested had been convicted of violent crimes.
What they forget to say in focusing on “violent crimes” is that most of the rest have been convicted of actual crimes, from low level ones like DUI to serious ones like identity theft and burglary. This has give the NOEB a Sad, so, they find their latest Excuse to support those who are unlawfully present
The crackdown is happening as the nation’s businesses are having difficulty finding employees. The national unemployment rate is at 4.4 percent, awfully close to full employment. Meanwhile, 10,000 baby boomers are turning 65 every day.
As Trump sends people back across the border and discourages others from coming to the United States, he is aggravating the biggest obstacle to economic growth, a labor shortage. Unauthorized immigrants make up about 5 percent of the U.S. civilian workforce, according to Pew Research Center estimates, and reducing that number – about 8 million workers – will drive up costs for produce and construction. Immigrants working illegally in this country have accounted for nearly half of the nation’s 800,000 crop farm workers in recent years.

Labor needs can’t be an excuse for employers not to follow immigration laws that call for verifying a worker’s immigration status, though that has been a common practice.
They should have just stopped there, because unlawful conduct is still unlawful conduct. But, they continue the paragraph
And in theory, fewer immigrant workers should drive up the pay of American workers. But the actual situation is that the economy needs the boost provided by workers here illegally and American workers are not stepping in to fill the labor gap as immigrant workers are pushed out of the economy.
Why would so many employers hire U.S. citizens when they can underpay illegals? And, yes, there is a big dearth in skills for doing lots of these jobs, because everyone has to get a degree from a college nowadays, one which is often worthless for just about any job. It is still no excuse to tolerate people being unlawfully present in the country.
The NOEB briefly discusses expanding work visas, but, they find those lead to workers being “effectively shackled to the employer who sponsors them and vulnerable to abuses in pay and work conditions and sexual assaults.” And that doesn’t happen to illegals? People who can’t complain? What they really want is “comprehensive immigration reform”, otherwise known as amnesty. Easy citizenship for people who broke our laws and didn’t earn citizenship. People who often do not learn the language yet demand that we give them the ability to vote, healthcare, housing, education, food, and money.
Democrats will trot out any excuse to create a big new segment of the population that is beholden to the government and will vote Democrat. That’s what this is all about.
This is why I have said that the Democrats cannot be both the party of the working man and the party of the non-working man. Getting rid of the illegals would force a raise in wages, which is something the Democrats say that they want, which should pull more Americans into the workforce, and off welfare.
But getting people off welfare is the last thing that the Democrats want, because they have seen, for a while now (not just 2016) that working-class Americans are voting Republican. Imagine what happens to the Democrats’ voter base when Americans can now find jobs, jobs that are paying more, because of Republican policies to deport illegal immigrants!
Right now, there is a demand for workers, but a real skills mismatch when it comes to the demand for jobs and the supply of qualified workers. If the illegals were deported, the unemployed Americans with few skills could move into the low-skill jobs the illegals have taken. That would still leave the problem of employers needing people with specific skills, but that demand is what will encourage new workers to develop those skills.
President Obama paid a lot of attention to Saudi Arabia over the last eight years, and the Democrats have learned the lesson: they want to use the illegals as the Saudis use “guest workers.“

That statement is not supported by economic data. If we had a genuine worker shortage, wages would be shooting up as businesses competed for workers to support demand for the businesses goods and services.
There is a labor shortage in the United States, and wages are rising; the problem is that there is a significant mismatch between the skills available workers have and the ones employers need. Employers need electricians and plumbers and welders and mechanics, and a bunch of other skilled workers, while the workers available aren’t electricians and plumbers and welders and mechanics. If you have a Class A CDL, you can get a good job, first thing Monday morning. If you are a finish carpenter, there’s no reason on God’s earth you can’t be working next week.
That’s where the illegals have hurt the American worker. You can learn to be a roofer in a week . . . and the Mexicans have done it. You can learn the skills to pour concrete (not finish it) in a day, and the illegals have stepped in to do that.

For some reason cons feel the need to justify their behavior with flawed ethical and economic behaviors – why not just admit you feel that the influx/normalization of (fill in the blank) Mexicans, Muslims, LGBTs, Blacks, etc threatens your sense of privilege as a white christian male? Take Back America, Make America Great Again – you fear losing the American culture you grew up with.
Why assume that Mexican immigrants would go on the dole? They work harder than Euro-Americans. Non-whites vote against Republicans because new Republicans support only non-Hispanic, white christians. A couple million more votes in California won’t change Dem fortunes much.

I don’t assume that they go on the dole, though it’s clear that they cost our economy a lot in taxpayer services. Rather, they allow Americans to stay on the dole, along with keeping wages depressed.
We certainly do need welfare reform to go along with deporting illegals; we need to make our welfare system such that if you won’t work, you don’t eat.
Good, so lets pass laws that keep them from ever voting and from ever being on the dole. You would go for that, right Mr. Righteous?
There is another unfortunate problem, this one of the unemployed workers’ own making: one of the biggest complaints among employers is that even when they find someone with the skills to do a particular job, there’s a significant chance that he won’t be able to pass the drug screen.
We’re not advocating open borders, we’re advocating a pragmatic and humane approach to the 12 million or so that are here now.
If you deport 1 miilion a year it will take 12 years and billions of dollars. To deport 1 million a year would require deporting 4000 individuals every work day. Really? And although most cons insist that non-citizens have no rights, that’s NOT what the Constitution says. It is unConstitutional to round up and deport without due process.
Some advocate terrorizing these residents so that they leave. Is this really an American ideal? We enabled their residence, we benefitted from their cheap labor, and collected taxes without giving benefits.
Most scholars disagree with your opinion that undocumented immigrants are a drain on the economy.

Deporting millions of American residents would cost 100s of billions in direct costs, would hurt the economy, is not practical and is would cause significant human suffering.
Can you give a good reason to support a massive deportation effort?
