Report: Florida Will Check New York Drivers at State Line on I-95
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Saturday the creation of a checkpoint at the I-95 state line on Florida’s northern border to screen drivers traveling from the New York City area to try and contain the spread of coronavirus.
The announcement came a day after DeSantis said he would set a similar checkpoint at the Northwest Florida border with Louisiana, targeting travelers from that state, the Tampa Bay Times reported.
“Upon entry in Florida, each arriving traveler or responsible family member (if traveling as a family) will be required to complete a traveler form,†the Florida Department of Transportation announced on Sunday.
The form requires travelers to fill out their contact information and trip details and failing to do so could violate Florida law.
The I-95 checkpoint is the latest screening in a series of screenings already taking place at Florida airports, aimed at people trying to come from New York City and the tri-state area, one of America’s hotspots for coronavirus.
Will this cause New Yorkers to go all Smokey and The Bandit and cruise the backroads into Florida? Really, should be checking everyone coming into the state, but, since NYC is one of the major hotspots (who knew that millions living on top of each other would be bad?), it’s understandable. In fact, the FDOT announcement actually targets New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Louisiana, and any area with a substantial outbreak. They’d probably give me a problem being from Raleigh, a major city in NC.
At that point, people will be required to isolate for 14 days or the duration of their visit, whichever is shorter. So, they aren’t being stopped. Just warned in an attempt to keep them from coming in the first place.
Meanwhile, at the southern border
President Donald Trump’s border reforms are helping the Department of Homeland Security to eject most southern migrants in just 96 minutes, according to a report in the Washington Post.
“Migrants who cross into the United States illegally are being expelled to Mexico in an average of 96 minutes under emergency coronavirus measures now in force across the U.S. southern border, according to three U.S. officials with knowledge of the latest government statistics,†the newspaper reported Monday.
When will AOC and other Open Borders advocates start whining?

John fails to note that in the states that have allowed illegal aliens to get licenses, the number of uninsured motorists have skyrocketed and what followed was the predicable increase in insurance rates for legal, insured drivers.

For a state that relies on tourism as a mainstay if their economy this might have consequences

And to what state do you refer? Or do you even know?
Florida is my state. I live in a county that relies heavily on tourism. Long before this edict from DeSantis was made, the hotels and tourist areas were either deserted or shuttered. Disney, Universal, etc., had all closed.
Hotels along the beaches had no guests.
The consequences were already being felt long before this act by the governor.
As of yesterday, my county had 32 cases of COVID-19. Twenty eight cases were residents and the other 4 were from New York.
There is real concern as to whether the actions and recommendations of New York which led to the spread of the virus could head this way and whether we, as a state should have to pay and put our citizens at risk for the irresponsible actions of another state.
People here mostly support the ban.
I am not one of them. More and more people in my county are joining me.
First, there is a Constitutional issue. Article 4 basically says that the rights and privileges in one state cannot be restricted to other states or citizens. That means if Florida is allowing movement and travel intrastate, it has no legal basis for restriction interstate.
Secondly, there is the Fourth Amendment. We cannot imagine how an out of state license plate gives rise to probable cause or the lesser threshold of “reasonable suspicion.” It’s just not there.
There are also some practical issues that show the problem with this policy:
1) Commercial trucks from out of state are exempt. That means the truck driver is exempt. So while a trucker can be coming from New York (or Louisiana which is under the same ban) can bring the virus with them.
2) As people from Florida are leaving the state and coming back, they too will bring the virus with them but not be subject to the stop at the border.
We wish that people would just follow the shelter in place recommendations, but at the same time, we understand people wanting to flee high infection areas such as New York.
Tough cases make bad laws.
