There was no choice but to go to war in Afghanistan, to hunt down and destroy al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden for the attack on the United States.
But first the United Kingdom and then the Soviet Union learned the lesson: no one can govern Afghanistan but the Afghanis, and even they don’t really do it well; it isn’t a nation but a group of tribes. It didn’t matter what puppet government we set up, it wasn’t going to last long. If there was ever a place where “make it a desert and call it peace” was appropriate, Afghanistan is it. We should have exterminated the Taliban, destroyed everything about their pathetic infrastructure, and then left, no later than 2006, leaving the surviving tribes to scratch together whatever they could from the ruins. Eventually that’s what will happen anyway.
My older daughter served briefly at Bagram, at the end of 2017. Even as late as that, there were the occasional mortar attacks, which caused no damage, from outside the base. If we couldn’t even secure that much, why were we there?
