This sounds awesome, federally formalized indoctrination
Experts tell Biden to teach 50 million American children about climate crisis in classrooms
This summer, New Jersey became the first state in the country to mandate climate change education in public schools. Now, advocates are urging President-elect Joe Biden to make sure other states do the same.
“With over 50 million children enrolled in public schools, education can help prepare children and youth to advance a more sustainable world. Whether future engineers, solar installers, business leaders, farmers, or policymakers, the next generation will face the impacts of climate change,” wrote former education secretary John King and New Jersey Gov. Christine Whitman, who also served as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency under President Bush. The open letter was also signed by former education secretary Arne Duncan and other former Cabinet members as well as scholars and climate activists.
Gotta love the notion of elitists who do not practice what they preach (remember the Glenn Reynolds thing “I’ll believe it’s a crisis when the people who tell me it’s a crisis act like it’s a crisis by changing their own lives”) trying to get China Joe to force all schools to teach a cult. Hey, if it’s so bad, let’s remove heat and AC from the schools, and get rid of school buses. As a start, right?
But while more than 80 percent of parents supported students learning about climate change in a NPR and Ipsos poll last year, more than half of teachers in the same survey said they never talked about climate change in their classrooms.
Perhaps the kids should learn actual real world skills? Perhaps they should be taught things and advised against taking out huge loans for mostly worthless college degrees? If they really want to do something important, how about nudging women and blacks towards stem programs? That’s the kind of SJW stuff that would make a difference.
While education could be part of the solution to climate change, it’s also part of the problem. Counting the carbon footprint of 98,000 schools, 480,000 primarily diesel school buses and more than 7 billion meals served in school cafeterias, the public education system has a significant environmental impact, the letter said.
Take it all away! Along with Joe Biden’s fossil fueled planes and vehicles.
Let’s face it, this is a way to make more climate cultists, who are willing to give up their own liberty, freedom, money, and choice to Government.
Teach types: Perhaps the kids should learn actual real world skills? Perhaps they should be taught things and advised against taking out huge loans for mostly worthless college degrees? If they really want to do something important, how about nudging women and blacks towards stem programs?
Teach is a hypocrite. He went to college but now advises other kids to forego education. Women and Blacks are being nudged towards STEM programs.
RadCons hate education and democracy.
Back when I went to college, a college degree actually meant something, even if it was in a field that was unrelated to your eventual profession.
The changes began with the 1991-92 recession, and got worse with the 2001-2002 recession: companies were laying off managers with liberal arts degrees, and didn’t replace them when the recessions ended. Degrees needed to be a bit more specific, because that was what businesses demanded.
Yes, women and blacks — and why do you capitalize ‘black’ when it refers to race? — are being encouraged toward technical fields, but those efforts are not all that successful. Other than a lot of women choosing medical fields, you don’t see much there.
Haven’t you noticed? Our host sells cars for a living. It’s a field which supports him, well enough, I suppose, but it isn’t one which requires a college degree.
What we are seeing now are the Democrats wanting to just ‘forgive’ college student loan debt, because so many people are now being graduated — if they are graduated at all — with huge student loan debts. Well, unless they earned their degrees in fields which do lead toward lucrative positions, they are, in effect, saddled with five and six figure debts that they are wondering how they can ever pay off as they say, “Would you like fries with that?”
College is both an opportunity and a trap. If college freshmen don’t choose well, they can fall into a lifelong trap.
Universities are not trade schools, but carpenters, mechanics, salesmen, laborers, clerks, cooks, farmers, concrete contractors, arborists, gardeners, wait staff, actors, athletes are not harmed by a college education. Learning philosophy, history, mathematics, composition, literature, chemistry, physics, biology, sociology, psychology, performing arts, business, economics etc makes for a thoughtful and liberal society.
A broad classical education is a personal and societal benefit. Although students select a major, e.g., life sciences, business, liberal arts, health sciences, mathematics, archeology, agriculture, history, PE and recreation, all colleges have broader requirements. Although a biology major I had classes in history, English, phys ed (Golf I and II!), economics, music, sociology, mathematics, political “science” and religion.
Because of cuts in government support for colleges and universities, student tuitions are increasing.
Decades ago tuition accounted for a quarter of college incomes, now it’s half. In addition, college expense inflation is growing at a greater rate than overall inflation. Today, presidents of state universities make over $1 million/yr – only the football and basketball head coaches make more! BTW, De’Rail Simms, running back asst coach at ECU made $145,000 in 2019. Head Coach Michael Houston made $1.4 million.
Forgiving student debt can make up for the education cuts over the past few decades. We spent more invading Iraq than we would spend on debt forgiveness. And after all, Don (Debt King) Trump relies on bankruptcies and debt forgiveness to run his organizations.
Listen, we get it. For whatever reason, educated folks tend to vote for Democrats, so conservatives are against higher education.
America’s economic issues are not because of an overeducated populace, but rather from working class compensation not keeping pace with overall productivity. This has occurred for many reasons including tax, labor, trade, patent, bankruptcy, healthcare, fiscal, gov’t revenue sharing and monetary policies – all designed to reward the leisure class at the expense of the working class. The rich get richer and poor get poorer, and it’s reaching a breaking point.
Our honored host suggested:
I went to school in buildings without air conditioning. The junior high school building, circa 1900, with creaking wooden floors and stairs, and the 1937 WPA/CCC high school building had something like 12 foot tall ceilings, with tall windows. Teachers had a pole with a big hook on it, so they could pull down the top sash of the windows, and then open the bottom sash, in what passed for natural AC, designed to get the warmer air by the ceiling to flow outside and the (sort of) cooler air from outside to flow in.
In Kentucky, in June and September, in the 1960s and very early 70s, this was what we had.
School buses? Didn’t have those! I took the short cut, walking along the railroad tracks, regardless of the weather. I know it was more than a mile, but a closer guesstimate I couldn’t give you. And yes, there were uphill portions both ways.
But we did have heat in the winter, old, clanky radiators. Hey, they worked!
I walked to school in Maine, too, but don’t remember that much about it. I can remember walking on sidewalks where the plows had piled the snow higher than the top of my head, but, in the third grade, my head wasn’t that high off the ground.
Teach you font seem to realize that all Americans are changing their lives
We ate becoming a greener country every year
Your Duke power company is moving away from dirty coal and going carbon neutral
Electric cars are going mainstream
Take a look at Tesla’s leasing program
About 540 a month and 0 to 60 in 3 seconds
Twice as fast as that old crappy Firebird with operating costs st about 33% of the old fashioned cars
Yes John, you’re right. The earth is greening because of the added CO2.
“working class compensation not keeping pace with overall productivity….â€. And if Chine Joe opens up the border floodgates as he’s said he would, working class compensation will suffer even more. But funny how, prior to the pandemic, Trump’s economy showed greater gains than any other president, with minorities benefiting the most. He sure seems to be failing at that racist thing no… https://www.foxbusiness.com/economy/trump-economy-mainstream-media-andy-puzder
