Canada Joins The Bandwagon Of Banning Fossil Fueled Vehicles By 2035

What’s the over/under that this exempts politicians like Justin Trudeau?

Canada will ban sales of combustion engine passenger cars by 2035

Canada is joining the ranks of countries and states planning to ban sales of combustion engine cars. Canada has outlined an Emissions Reduction Plan that will require all new passenger car sales to be zero-emissions models by 2035. The government will gradually ramp up pressure on automakers, requiring “at least” 20 percent zero-emissions sales by 2026 and 60 percent by 2030.

Officials didn’t say whether this applied to a make’s product mix or simply the volume of cars sold. The strategy is more forgiving for the workplace — the Canadian government wanted 35 percent of total medium- and heavy-duty vehicle sales to be zero-emissions by 2035, and 100 percent of a “subset” of those machines by 2040.

The country is also offering $1.7 billion CAD (about $1.36 billion US) to extend incentives for buying electric cars and other zero-emissions vehicles. The current federal program offers up to a $5,000 CAD ($4,010 US) rebate for EVs, plug-in hybrids and hydrogen fuel cell cars that meet varying price, seat and battery requirements. Some provinces, such as British Columbia and Nova Scotia, offer their own incentives.

Will limos and such that politicians drive around in be exempt? How well will these EVs work in the Canadian winter?

Canada’s car market is small compared to the US. Passenger vehicle sales in Canada reached 1.64 million in 2021, according to estimates, versus an estimated 15 million for the country’s southern neighbor. However, the de facto ban on combustion engine cars could further motivate car brands already transitioning to EVs — that’s still a lot of potentially lost sales, particularly for a country known for its auto manufacturing plants.

There’s actually a pretty big manufacturing business in Canada. Toyota and American manufacturers make a lot of vehicles in Canada.

Now, when do Justin Trudeau and his Comrades give up their own use of fossil fuels?

Actually, it’s pretty explicit: if “requiring ‘at least’ 20 percent zero-emissions sales by 2026 and 60 percent by 2030” is the standard, then sales means sales! The only question is how are sales to be measured, by unit volume or dollar costs.

But that leaves the obvious question: what if Canadian consumers don’t choose to buy “at least” of new car sales being zero-emission? Canada’s a big, big country, with a lot of wide open, mostly empty spaces, and with a colder climate, electric vehicles will suffer from reduced range. If you live in Ottawa or Toronto or Montreal, there’ll probably be commercial charging stations within reasonable distances, but if you want to drive your Tesla from Edmonton to Saskatoon, you might not want a plug-in electric.

Well, that’s just too damn bad for them! Once der Fuhrer und der party decrees it, it’s law. Once they start freezing your assets and seizing your bank accounts you’ll fall in line just like those truckers. Screw them. Who do they think they are, free people? Citizens? They are dirt people, deplorables, bitter clingers an non-essentials. They should be thankful if Canada doesn’t toss them in prison without trial like the Democrats in Washington do.

That’s the “progressive” way to do things.

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

Like the U.S., only 20% of Canada’s populace is rural.

But that’s where the food comes from.

Sorry James Lewis but the leftists want to import their food from tyrannical countries like they do their energy. Besides, as dOwd said “only” 20% of Canadas population is rural so who cares about the life or death of a measly 8 million people. Live, die, freeze to death, starve to death they represent Canadas “deplorables”. “Progressives” have more important matters to conduct. The only time leftists care about minorities is when they can exploit them for their own benefit.

How will the peasants in Canada charge their cars? Probably at home which is where 80% charge their EVs using low night rates The median range of an EV sold in USA is about 250 miles . Not sure how many will be making frequent trips longer than that..
Using level 3 charging stations 350kW gives you about 200 miles range in 22 mins of charging time. A stock Porsche EV drove LA to NY with less than 2.5 hours total charging time. Of course thst is only what is available RIGHT NOW.
70% of Canada’s energy comes from renewables. The median EV range has gone up 250% in 10 years.
Trudeau’s car? Usually a hybrid Lexus however I suspect that when it is replaced it will be with an EV like an EV suburban, do out in 2024
There are cutrently about 500 places in the USA where you can charge for free including grocery stores like Wegmans
If new fossil car production ends in 2035 you can still keep operating that for 2 decades without too many parts problems.
Teach will be 85yo then (maybe)
