‘Pro-Life’ Conservatives Are Mad the Government Isn’t Letting Migrant Infants Starve to Death
There’s a baby formula shortage in the United States. Republican lawmakers and conservative media members are taking frustration out on immigrants.
Fox News hosts have spent the past 24 hours raising hell over immigrant babies at the U.S.-Mexico border receiving formula, arguing that it should instead be distributed to Americans first. “[For] American families there’s a shortage, but if you’re a migrant, don’t worry because Uncle Sam has a stash of that,” Fox & Friends host Steve Doocy said Friday morning.
Doocy is not wrong. There’s more than plenty of baby formula available for those who come in illegally/show up and demand asylum, people who have seen the Democrat talking points and taken long treks with babies, putting them at risk.The RS piece makes no attempt to show that Doocy is wrong.

The subject became fodder for right-wing xenophobia earlier this week, with Rep. Kat Cammack (R-Fla.) on Wednesday tweeting a picture of what she said was “shelves and pallets packed with baby formula” at the Ursula Processing Center in McAllen, Texas. She contrasted that with a picture of a bare store shelf, writing, “This is what America last looks like.”
“Xenophobic.” But, she’s not wrong. Nor are the other Republicans mentioned in the screed.
The care of infants in U.S. detention centers, unsurprisingly, is the responsibility of U.S. officials, and immigrants can’t just leave to try to find formula themselves. Yet Abbott’s fellow “pro-life” Republicans — including Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, North Carolina Rep. Dan Bishop and Texas Rep. Troy Nehls — are essentially suggesting that the government let the infants of immigrants starve to death.
So, see, Republicans are just pointing out what’s going on, so, it means they want illegal alien babies to starve. Freaking leftist nutjobs.
No, Republicans do not want illegal immigrant babies to starve; we want them to thrive, but we want then to thrive in Mexico!
If the illegals know that there’s food, including baby formula, waiting for them, north of the border, they will try to come north of the border. If they are made aware that there is no food, or baby formula, waiting for then north of the border, they won’t cross the border.
We put cheese in mousetraps to lure the mouses into the traps; set a mousetrap without bait, and mice won’t get trapped in it. The same logic applies to humans; if there’s no food awaiting them, they won’t show up!
I’ve said it before: to be a conservative, you have to be willing to be an [insert slang term for the rectum here], because being a Nice Guy™ simply brings about the bad behavior you want to prevent. Formula at the border is irrelevant, so why are wingers seemingly apoplectic? Because they can use it for political gain. Period. After all, ILLEGALS!!.
In the real world, the current shortage of infant formula results from several factors:
America regulates the import of infant formula from Europe and Canada. We all should agree that America, via the US FDA has a valid interest in assuring that infant formula is safe and nutritious. Imports of European formula is often limited because of labeling requirements and high tariffs, and Canadian formula by the latest version of the North America trade agreement (2020).
In addition, the WIC program has led to the US having basically three producers, Abbott, Gerber and Mead-Johnson.
In that environment, a viral pandemic which led to early hoarding of formula (and toilet paper!!) AND supply chain issues, disrupted the market further. Note that formula manufacturers saw a huge surge in purchases, but once people had stocked up, the manufacturers saw a huge drop in purchases and reduced their production accordingly! Sigh.
America was one shock away from disaster! Enter Cronobacter sakazakii, a lethal bacterium that kills about half the infants it infects. Similac infant formula from an Abbott plant in Michigan was apparently contaminated with C. sakazakii killing two of five infected infants. Some here argue that 2 dead infants is a small price to pay for keeping the Abbott factory in MI open, but how many dead are too many? If your 2 mo old daughter died after ingesting Similac how much would Abbott need to pay you to make you feel better? $2 million, $20 million? Anyway, Abbott issued a VOLUNTARY recall and VOLUNTARILY closed the plant.
Corporate general counsels can smell billions of dollars of lawsuits for miles. Just ask Bayer-Monsanto about lymphoma ($20 billion if they’re fortunate, but glyphosate is still being sold!). BTW… glyphosate sales should hit $10 billion/YEAR soon, so don’t pity Bayer toooo much, LOL.
