Cornyn Walks On Senate Gun Deal, Says He’s Done

Did the GOP actually think the Democrats would demand more and more?

GOP, Dem Senate bargainers divided over gun deal details

Democratic and Republican senators were at odds Thursday over how to keep firearms from dangerous people as bargainers struggled to finalize details of a gun violence compromise in time for their self-imposed deadline of holding votes in Congress next week.

Lawmakers said they remained divided over how to define abusive dating partners who would be legally barred from purchasing firearms. Disagreements were also unresolved over proposals to send money to states that have “red flag” laws that let authorities temporarily confiscate guns from people deemed dangerous by courts, and to other states for their own violence prevention programs. (snip)

Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, a lead GOP bargainer, seemed visibly unhappy as he left Thursday’s closed-door session after nearly two hours, saying he was flying home.

“This is the hardest part because at some point, you just got to make a decision. And when people don’t want to make a decision, you can’t accomplish the result. And that’s kind of where we are right now,” Cornyn said.

“I’m not frustrated, I’m done,” he added, though he said he was open to continued discussions.

So, not really done. Hopefully the Senate Republicans will hold strong and won’t allow Dems to keep adding more and more gun grabbing.

(Reuters) The lead Republican negotiator in U.S. Senate efforts to craft a bipartisan gun safety bill walked out of the talks on Thursday, raising questions about whether lawmakers will vote on the legislation before leaving for a two-week July 4 recess.

“It’s fish or cut bait,” Senator John Cornyn said after hours of negotiations that included his fellow Republican Senator Thom Tillis and Democratic Senators Chris Murphy and Kyrsten Sinema.

“I don’t know what they have in mind, but I’m through talking,” Cornyn said.

Some other Republicans, such as disappointment Thom Tillis, said they’ll get something done. How much will they give up to Democrats? Time will tell.

(Yahoo News) With the U.S. Senate poised to defy all expectations and actually pass bipartisan gun-safety legislation in the wake of last month’s deadly mass shootings in Uvalde, Texas, and Buffalo, N.Y., a new Yahoo News/YouGov poll shows that clear majorities of Americans support each of the deal’s major provisions.

But an even greater number of Americans favor two reforms that Republican legislators refused to include in the framework they unveiled with their Democratic counterparts earlier this week: universal background checks for all gun sales (71%) and raising the national age to purchase semiautomatic weapons from 18 to 21 (68%)

The left believes they can push this gun grab out till election time to garner more support and drum up their base’s energy.

The problem for the left is that their base is shrinking. Except for AOC-like districts where a dead hampster with a *D* next to its name would win. These people in these kinds of districts are fearless and blind to reality. On both sides.

They feel empowered by voters who are not representative of the nation at large. ON BOTH SIDES. GOP and Democrat.

As a result, the idea here is to either get the GOP to cave to substantial gun grab or to push it out and use it as a talking point that the right is not serious about gun safety and wants to kill your kids as Elwood started spouting here and which CNN and MSNBC repeatedly were using just about the time DOWD started up with that mantra.

A counter to Democrats’ wants to murder unborn babies is, of course, the GOP wants to murder Your kids in school shootings which is why they won’t cave on gun control.

  2. Facts Matter says:

The proposal is also supported by John Cornyn (R-TX), Roy Blunt (R-MO), Richard Burr (R-NC), Bill Cassidy (R-LA) Susan Collins (R-ME), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Rob Portman (R-OH), Mitt Romney (R-UT), Thom Tillis (R-NC) and Pat Toomey (R-PA).

This is a list of 10 senators that will sell the Right down the river on gun control. Can you imagine if there was a list of 10 democratic senators who would sell the left down the river on ABORTION? Those people would have millions of people marching in front of their houses and people driving up in cabs to their homes to murder them.

But no. Not the GOP. These lunatics can do this kind of shit and get away with it because Republicans are not very bright or aggressive in getting their party to vote the way 74 million voters want them to because you know we all believe in states having a lot of power, unlike the Democrats who believe in the nanny state for all of us. RUN BY THEM.

Now I am not advocating for violence nor am I suggesting these senators should not compromise on many things, but on key components of what the right adheres to. NO. Not only NO but HELL NO.

This bill is like someone here posted. NOTHING MORE THAN ANOTHER GIANT SOCIAL PROGRAM RAN BY UNELECTED BUREACRATS TO NANNY STATE US INTO THE GROUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Facts, of your list of rinos, I’m familiar with several, but one stands out to me. John Wayne Cornyn is a rino first class, close to Romney status. Every 6 years, he comes back to TX rootin’ and tootin’. Then beats any primary challengers into submission with money, convinces the unwashed that he is their man, gets reelected against some dem and then slithers back into the swamp to support the interests of his bosses. Unfortunately, some of us are left with no choice but to vote against the dem.
I suspect that this is the case with many of these rinos, I know it is with a couple. I can’t think of a better case for term limits.

Question is how do we get the very peo0ple whose power is striped by term limits to vote for term limits? Especially democommies. There are a few Republicans who will vote their conscience but dems vote in lock step like Nazis at a beer hall.

How’s that drunkin DUI hit and run Pelosi pig doing? Has anyone seen that reported anywhere but FOX?

        • The Liberal but not libertarian Elwood P. Dowd says:

I never watch FOX but knew about Paul Pelosi’s DUI.

        • UnkleC says:

CarolAnn, you present the nut of the conundrum. The non-rinos might support the idea, but of course, rinos and dems, lacking conscience or morals, would only vote to stay at the trough. Primaries and citizen referendums are the only possibilities that I currently see. It’s tough, we have a congress critter here on the north of Houston that looked great for his first term, 2nd term he went swamp, and for the recent primary had enough money to trash several good opponents handily.
          We gotta keep plugging.

Well, everybody I knew predicted that the initial ‘agreement’ would have demanded add-ons. The only acceptable gun control law was the one passed in 1791: the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

When our rights are restricted, they cease to be treated as rights, but as government-granted privileges. Our hope, right now, is that there will be enough partisan infighting to torpedo this whole thing.

  4. L.G.Brandon!, L.G.Brandon! says:

As Dana and I have both pointed out before “rights” are not granted by governments, privileges are. Like driver licences. And quite frankly most licenses should be the domain of the states not the feds. It’s not the feds business if I want to open a restaurant, a barber shop or go fishing or hunting.

That’s why the RIGHT to K & B is essential. The feds have so far overstepped their actual power that at this point we have no viable Republic. Trying to take our guns ant the right to buy and own them is just a precursor to complete tyranny.

Dowd and Hairy should realize that at no time in human history has a government that censored it’s citizens or denied them the right to arms been “the good guys”. NEVER! Not the Nazis, nor Soviets, not Chicoms, not Idi Amin, nor Pol Pot, nor Castro or any other nation you can think of. They ALL had two things in common: People were “barred” from speaking at the public square and people were denied arms.

When the democommies formed their Stalinesque collusion with the news media and social media to steal an election and deprive the opposition of free speech it was a shot across the bow to Freedom loving Americans everywhere. The failure of our single party government to stop it was no surprise as it was they who benefited. Who do you think will benefit if citizens are disarmed then the feds tell us to close our businesses, move our homes, we can’t drive our cars, what jobs we can do?

The object it to rule decency out of America. To hobble us to the desires of people who can’t define what a woman is. To put the people who support baby killing and child grooming in power. These democommies have sold their soul to the gods of power and lust and they are dragging America down with them.

Now I’m not suggesting violence but are we going to let them murder us first because is history is any indication those same governments that censored their people and took their arms eventually started murdering them. Every single one of those governments committed genocide. Are we gonna wait our turn?

I know, it can’t happen here. They closed all small business during a Covid as a trial run. They burned cities in a months long riot to see if they could get away with it and they did, They stole an election and REFUSED to audit it. They arrested Americans for demanding an audie and called it an insurrection. They hold our people in prison without trial. They intimidate SC justices with impunity. Yea, It can’t happen here. And all gay people wanted was the right to marry and now they have a month of “celebration” of child grooming, buggery and disease.

It can’t happen here my ass.

    FJB and his jerkoff followers.

The Dems have had power since 2021 and as of yet no genocide, no censorship. Conservatives are likely to retake the House, Senate and White House in the next two years. Conservatives have a majority of the Supreme Court. Maybe what the commenter IS suggesting is a preemptive strike against the Dems. Murder the Dems before they have a chance to murder the GOPhers!

Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, S Korea, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Vatican etc

Are none of these nations “good guys”?

Almost all advanced nations have restrictions on the type of firearms available and who may possess them. Are they less safe than the US?
