My ancestors were on both sides of the issue since many of them were Irish, Viking, Indian, and Jewish. In the US, slavery is long past, but the thread from slavery extended through reconstruction, Jim Crow etc. Racial segregation in schools wasn’t outlawed until 1954, the Civil Rights Act enacted in 1964 and the Voting Rights Act in 1965.
