The weather nightmare before Christmas

Tens of millions of Americans will find themselves recalibrating – and in some cases canceling – holiday plans over the next week, as an exceptionally intense Arctic front plows across most of the eastern two-thirds of the United States during the run-up to Christmas Day.

Below-freezing air will push to the Gulf Coast by Christmas weekend, with readings likely to dip below zero Fahrenheit from Oklahoma to Ohio late this week. On top of this, a “bomb” cyclone (one that deepens by at least 24 millibars in 24 hours) will race from the Central Plains to the Great Lakes on Friday and Saturday, December 23-24. Fierce winds and heavy snow are expected to produce widespread blizzard conditions and shut down transportation over portions of the Great Lakes and Midwest on one of the year’s busiest travel weekends.

Heavy rains and high winds will buffet the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast before the front arrives, most likely bringing a burst of cold and a quick shot of snow around Saturday (Christmas Eve).

Sounds like a good time to travel, eh?

Every weather event now plays out in an atmosphere affected by the addition of greenhouse gases from human activity (mainly the burning of fossil fuels). This doesn’t necessarily mean that every type of weather event will become more extreme or more frequent as a result of human-caused climate change. Like weather itself, the effects of climate change can be variegated, affecting some regions and some types of dangerous weather more than others. (snip)

One intriguing line of research emerged from a series of surprisingly intense winter storms in the U.S. and Europe, as well as a surprising drop in average winter temperatures over Siberia. A scientific debate has now raged for more than a decade on whether the amplified atmospheric warming and increased sea ice loss found over the Arctic might be leading to more-extreme winter weather events in midlatitudes, even if winters as a whole are trending less fearsome over the long term.

As laid out in a series of papers, the core thesis is that the warming Arctic could be making the polar jet stream — and the stratospheric polar vortex it encircles — more unstable and variable. In turn, this could foster vortex displacement events where the polar vortex splits in two, or stretches, thus pushing frigid surface air unusually far south into the midlatitudes. The splitting and stretching could also be influenced by reverberations as the jet stream interacts with enhanced snowfall and high pressure over Siberia during the autumn months.

Sigh.

Unemployment benefits and Obamacare subsidies outpace median income in several states, study finds
Benefits amount to over $100,000 in three states for a family of four with two people not working.

Welcome to the left’s version of America. Now you know why there is help wanted signs everywhere.

Clowerd and Piven, Klauss Schwaub and the Great Reset. Socialism comes to America. Voter Fraud. FBI, CIA, and all the 3 letter agencies making up a new American version of the GESTAPO.

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

What? The gubmint will give you $100,000 not to work?

Where do I sign up? Blue states, Washington, Massachusetts or NJ! That’s where.

Note too that the bulk of these “payments” are actually gubmint subsidies for health insurance for a family of four, not cash payments. This is essentially transferring tax dollars to insurance companies to cover working class and poor families.

And most of us old folks have taxpayer subsidized healthcare.

I thought that is what Medicaid was for. Or are they lying abut that too? And isn’t that what contributes to the wealth disparity between the rich and poor?

And most of us old folks have taxpayer subsidized healthcare.

Why would a rich old guy like you get subsidized health care? And you once claimed you paid “millions in taxes” so wouldn’t your decades long Medicare contributions and your current premiums be paying for that? Or is that another lie?

Wouldn’t that mean you are a rich welfare cheat taking money you don’t need? Or does that only matter for Reps?

        • Elwood P. Dowd says:

          L’Roy,

It sounds as if you are unfamiliar with how the ACA and Medicaid works.

Same about Medicare for seniors. The higher your income, the more you pay monthly. We’ve never objected to paying taxes to help support those less fortunate. You’re welcome.

We in the US will eventually give ourselves a universal healthcare system similar to any number of other developed countries.

Well Elwood, I’m not an expert in the field, are you?

We’ve never objected to paying taxes to help support those less fortunate. You’re welcome.

Say whaaaat? Are you pitying me because you’re a rich white racist cracker? Sarcastic “you’re welcome” is noted and just shows how you like all leftists think you’re better than us normal folks.

We in the US will eventually give ourselves a universal healthcare system similar to any number of other developed countries.

Like the wonderful systems in both the UK and Canada that can’t serve the medical needs of their people? Or adopt policies of euthanasia to help “balance the budget”? Real cool.

We have a support system for the elderly and the poor. What’s your beef? You want me to pay into healthcare like I do to Social Security so rich white guys like you can get free medical?

All those millions you have paid in taxes and you’re still stupid!

          • Elwood P. Dowd says:

            L’Roy,

Do you feel being black somehow immunizes your “ideas” against criticism?

I don’t pity you for being black but rather pity the nation that the trump-kult continues to gaslight people.

We pay more US taxes than billionaires like your spiritual leader, trump. But rather than bitch and whine about taxes as connies do, we consider it an honor and obligation to support America and Americans.

We support the ACA, Medicaid and Medicare but also support improving the patchwork system to streamline it. And yes, nations such as Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, England, France, Germany etc (you get the idea) have healthcare systems as good as or better than ours and pay less for the privilege! BTW, more Americans travel to Canada for care than Canadians come here. Here in the US we spend about double per capita on healthcare than do the citizens of Australia, Belgium etc (you get the idea). Is our healthcare system nearly TWICE as good as Japan’s or Germany’s?? Ask Australians, Belgians, Canadians, English, Italians, French, Japanese, New Zealanders, Swiss etc if they dislike their healthcare systems, LOL.

It’s another connie myth that our healthcare is the best. It’s good, but complicated, and the most expensive.

And for all the “euthanasia” you describe, these nations have life expectancies greater than the US!

You typed: We have a support system for the elderly and the poor.

Which I support. But it’s expensive, complicated and still leaves millions on the outside looking in. We can do better. There are dozens of other nations with less expensive, less complicated systems that take better care of all their citizens than we do. We spend 17.1% of our GDP on healthcare. Switzerland is in second place at 12.3%. For all we spend, the US struggles to land in the top ten in healthcare quality.

Southern cracker that I am, I’ve yet to call you stupid for your beliefs.

Of course in the 70s the exact same weather pattern was blamed on global cooling.
    Must be the bi-polar vortex..

  5. RW says:

Yesterday morning, December 20th, the low temp was minus 18 degrees F. At 11:00 AM, the outside temp was minus 19 F. Purdy darn cold out there these days.

Around midnight, the low temp reached minus 27 F.

Thank goodness for global warming, otherwise it could have been minus 29 degrees below zero at midnight.

You can believe in global warming all you want, believe until the cows come home.

One thing is for sure, you are being lied to, duped, taken for a ride.

The cold snap will be around for a few more days, then the outside temps will be closer to normal winter weather. Whatever that is.

  6. L'Roy White says:

I don’t pity you for being black but rather pity the nation that the trump-kult continues to gaslight people.

Yesterday the fascist and corrupt anti Trump Congressional “hearing” decided they want Trumps tax records. The very records deemed sacrosanct to every other American unless he is convicted if tax fraud. Why? Haven’t you creeps tortured Trump enough yet? One “investigation”, two impeachments, one “Jan 6 investigation” just trying to tie Trump into some bullshit conspiracy to overturn a crooked election. All the while keeping American citizens in prison without bail for what? Protesting their government for redress of grievance

The only gaslighting going on here is from you America hating communists of the democrat party. Gaslighting about Trump, about Wuhan flu, gaslighting about what a woman is, about climate change, about almost every policy you endorse. It’s all lies from you Elwood.

You’re attitude in your comment was exactly that of pity for me because I’m not a rich white guy like you. You insult my race. You insult my intelligence. You insult my God. You insult the very country I love. But mostly you insult all things good everywhere.

We pay more US taxes than billionaires like your spiritual leader, trump. But rather than bitch and whine about taxes as connies do, we consider it an honor and obligation to support America and Americans.

You think you pay more in taxes than billionaires? You really need to educate yourself about who pays the most taxes. But just saying you do for the sake of argument, who made those tax laws? Your fascist party did. You have no one to blame but yourself. Everybody bitches and whines about taxes not just “connies” so stop gaslighting (see you just did it again). Paying taxes to piss away money on the BS our gov does is no honor and least wise an obligation. They have the obligation to spend our money fruitfully. Do you think pedo joe is spending our money in an intelligent way? I don’t.

Which I support. But it’s expensive, complicated and still leaves millions on the outside looking in. We can do better. Yu really do think I’m stupid don’t you, Elwood? Now list the negative effects of those country’s health care systems. Or are they perfect. And you do realize a health care system for 8.5 million Swiss is a tiny dot compared to insuring 350 million Americans or don’t you? Even if you add all those other countries together they don’t come up to our demographics. Plus we have more racial diversity causing unique needs and more divers weather also causing different problems. You compare apples to hand grenades and think you made a point. Well, you didn’t. LOL.

Southern cracker that I am, I’ve yet to call you stupid for your beliefs.

The inference is there and still is. You talk down to every commenter on this site even the owner Teach. You assume you are superior and it bleeds through your condescending remarks. And you as a pompous elitist can’t even see it.
