Men and women who worked out at least 30 minutes most days were about four times more likely to survive covid-19 than inactive people, according to an eye-opening study of exercise and coronavirus outcomes among almost 200,000 adults in Southern California.
Eye opening? To whom? We knew early on that people who were in better shape and got exercise were much less likely to get a bad case of Wuhan Flu or die. We knew it was mostly getting the infirm, people with pre-existing conditions, were in bad shape.
The study found that exercise, in almost any amount, reduced people’s risks for a severe coronavirus infection. Even people who worked out for as little as 11 minutes a week — yes, a week — experienced lower risks of hospitalization or death from covid than those who moved about less.
“It turns out exercise is even more powerful than we thought” at protecting people from severe covid, said Robert Sallis, a clinical professor at Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine in Los Angeles and senior author of the new study.
The findings add to mounting evidence that any amount of exercise helps lower the ferocity of coronavirus infections, a message with particular relevance now, as holiday travel and gatherings ramp up and covid cases continue to rise.
Science already offers copious support for the idea that regular, moderate exercise increases our immune response and generally helps us avoid respiratory infections or recover more rapidly if we do catch a bug. In a 2011 study, adults who worked out regularly were almost half as likely to develop colds or similar infections as inactive people and also about 40 percent less likely to report their illnesses as lingering.
Like with everything else through 2020, it was all based on “ZOMG, we have to Do Something!!!!!!! Everybody Panic!” rather than established science being applied to a novel coronavirus.

You raise a good point. Mortality rates are higher in red states for reasons in addition to just vaccine ignorance/resistance. Obesity, drug use, poor healthcare infrastructure, lower education levels, more rural population, poverty, higher homicide rates, more Republicans… are all characteristic of red states.

Actually, using numbers without looking at the total picture is very misleading.
If we looked only deaths as the result of homicide for Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville, Chicago, Detroit, LA, etc., we might draw the conclusion black youths, as a nationwide group per thousand are very dangerous when the actual cause is the education system, or lack thereof, poor policing, etc., etc.
In the case of Covid, the death rate is around 33% for the elderly. Therefore, clusters of the elderly, as Governor Cuomo, along with several of his Democratic peers showed, is a deadly situation.
Red states, have a higher number of the elderly because you don’t retire to such places as Michigan. Having more elderly should naturally result in a higher death rate.
Interestingly enough, the death rate between New York with its rigid lockdown and Florida with its refusal to shut down is almost identical. And Washington, with its cloudy rainy climate which drives people in where people are supposed to catch Covid has 1969 deaths per million death rate. And then Mormon Utah, with its ban on alcohol, caffeine, nicotine leads the pack with around 1600.
Confusing, eh? Think maybe we should leave politics out of it?
