NC Gov, Who Sent His Kids To Private School, Declares State Of Emergency Over School Choice Bill

Isn’t it funny how this kind of stuff works? Lots of moonbat Dems call for defunding the police, then hire private security or call for more police to protect themselves. Governors who sent their kids to expensive private schools are against the peasants having school choice

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper declares ‘state of emergency’ over school choice bill

Democratic North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper declared a “state of emergency” on Monday in an attempt to stop a school choice bill from passing the state legislature.

Cooper released a video announcement where he declared a state of emergency, arguing that the state of public education is “no less important” than other emergencies.

“It’s time to declare a State of Emergency for public education in North Carolina. There’s no Executive Order like with a hurricane or the pandemic, but it’s no less important,” Cooper stated.

He continued, “It’s clear that the Republican legislature is aiming to choke the life out of public education. I’m declaring this state of emergency because you need to know what’s happening. If you care about public schools in North Carolina, it’s time to take immediate action and tell them to stop the damage that will set back our schools for a generation.”

Funny, you’d think he would think about the children first, but, no, he cares more about the unions who donate to Democrats, regardless of whether they are doing their jobs or not.

Let’s check WRAL

Rep. Tricia Cotham of Mecklenburg County, whose recent party switch from Democrat to Republican gave the GOP veto-proof seat majorities in both chambers, dismissed Cooper’s speech as “political theater.”

“The true emergency here is that the governor is advocating for systems rather than students themselves,” Cotham said in a statement. “Education is not one-size-fits-all, and North Carolina families should have the freedom to determine what kind of education is best for them.”

I’m totally shocked that they failed to mention where Cooper sent his kids to school. CBS17? Nope. Nor at ABC11. Nor the News and Observer. Totally oversights, right?

During the Philadelphia mayoral campaign, I noted how Helen Gym Flaherty, the hard-left ‘progressive’ who was, thank the Lord, handily defeated, kept touting how she saved Edward T Steel Elementary School from being converted into a ‘charter school.’ In the still public Steel Elementary, which is ranked 1,205th out of 1,607 Pennsylvania elementary schools, 8% of students scored at or above the proficient level in reading, and a whopping 1% scored at or above that level in math.

Mrs Flaherty was strongly supported by the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers.

Maybe, just maybe, if the teachers were putting less concern into teaching that girls can be boys and boys can be girls, and more into reading, writing, and arithmetic, there’d be less reason for people to want private schools.

Shocked ??? I am shocked that the Gov of NC would send his kids to a private school costing 28k
Education is very important to having a successful life.
Teach’s own high school alma ma, Blaine Academy, prepared him well for his success in life. Tuition there is now 50k a year to or day students, 70k for boarders.feginiyrly a school for the children of our elites! Who are nuw Teach’s sworn enemies

Isn’t it time that the United States gives up on the failed experiment of public education?

Think of the money we’d save. Obviously, the oppressive nazi-like mandates that kids must be indoctrinated to government-industry complex (GIC) standards should be the first to go. The GIC has a single objective – developing a malleable, unquestioning, obedient workforce.

Think about it. From state to state parents have forfeited their right to rear their own children to the GIC! Brush their hair, pack their backpack and put them on the bus. And let’s call a spade a spade – these ‘schools’ are actually indoctrination centers or reeducation camps. A further benefit for the GIC is that compulsory schooling is low cost baby-sitting permitting moms and dads to be productive workers!

Parents alone should decide IF and HOW MUCH formal education THEIR children need. If the parents cannot afford school for THEIR children perhaps it’s for the greater good if their line withers. And think how unfair the current system is to hard-working American elites who inherited millions but are ALSO forced to pay their hard-earned monies to send OTHER PEOPLE’S KIDS to school!

Public education is not a “failed experiment”. Federally controlled education run by labor unions is.

None, I repeat none of our current problems existed before the feds got into the education business and before schools decided that unionizing teachers was a good idea.

Education was always the purview of the state or local communities, it’s in the constitution, falls under the 10th amendment. We spend $136 billion a year on public education. I don’t consider that “low cost” baby sitting by any standard.

        $136,000,000,000 / 120,000,000 = $1133 per year per worker.

        • L'Roy White says:

It amounts to about $11,000 per student some as high as $18,000. Please stop twisting the facts to suit your narrative. BTW, it’s not just “workers” that pay for education. It’s a tax on everyone like most all taxes are.

$18,000 for 8 months a year is not “low cost”.

          • Elwood P. Dowd says:

            L’Roy,

We’re talking past each other. I accepted your number for overall spending and divided by the number of workers (not all workers have children).

The investment/student in public education by state does vary between about about $8K(UT)to $20K(NY) per student per year.

In 2020, the federal government provided 8 percent of total revenues for elementary and secondary education ($60 billion), states provided 47 percent ($377 billion), and local governments provided 45 percent ($357 billion).

So, in 2020, all in, we spent some $800 billion on elementary and secondary education. Within a state the investment can vary greatly – in CT, the Oxford School District (3% poverty rate) invests $36,000 per pupil per year, while Hartford School District (31% poverty rate) invests $19,000 per pupil per year.

The question I have is does taking tax monies from public schools and transferring to private schools make fiscal and social sense? If it does, I’m all for it because the goal is to educate children. I also understand a problem impacting many middle class Americans – for example, we have friends and relatives who choose to send their children to Catholic schools – and they pay not only taxes but also tuition to the private schools.

The NC legislation will subsidize not only these middle-class families but also wealthy parents, including Gov Cooper. The NC subsidies are a percentage of mean state expenditure per pupil per year, which in NC is almost $11,000/pupil/year depending on household income. The addition of subsidies for the wealthy nearly doubles the expense!

It can’t be just one person! It must be a think-tank of resident geniuses like the Heritage Foundation or Hoover Institute!

  4. Elwood P. Dowd says:

Funny, you’d think FOX and Mr Teach, neither who linked the actual bill or discussed its content, would think about the children first… or at least their hapless followers.

    Here ya go!!

The bill expands the existing NC government program that awards taxpayer money to parents who send their kids to private schools!! The earlier policy had upper limits on parental income to be eligible. This version will allow that hypocrite, Gov Cooper, to collect thousands of taxpayer $$ for sending his kids to that $28,000 private school!!

Meanwhile, it would cost Ms Beatrice Washington of Bumpfukt NC, who makes the NC median household income of $60,000/yr $56,000 to send her two children to Gov Cooper’s prestigious school (which we all agree is much superior to the Bumpfukt NC district public schools) and the $11,000 per child she’d receive from taxpayer funds just might allow her to do that!! It appears that Gov Cooper would now receive about $5000 per child. Would Ms Washington NOW be able to afford the $28,000 per child per year school?

(b2) Beginning with the 2024-2025 school year, scholarship grants shall be awarded to eligible students as follows:
    (1) For students residing in households with an income level not in excess of the
amount required for the student to qualify for the federal free or reduced-price
lunch program, per year per eligible student, an amount of up to one hundred
percent (100%) of the average State per pupil allocation for average daily
membership in the prior fiscal year.
    (2) For students residing in households with an income level between the amount
required for the student to qualify for the federal free or reduced-price lunch
program and not in excess of two hundred percent (200%) of that amount, per
year per eligible student, an amount of up to ninety percent (90%) of the
average State per pupil allocation for average daily membership in the prior
    fiscal year.
    (3) For students residing in households with an income level of between two
hundred percent (200%) of the amount required for the student to qualify for
the federal free or reduced-price lunch program and not in excess of four
hundred fifty percent (450%) of that amount, per year per eligible student, an
amount of up to sixty percent (60%) of the average State per pupil allocation
for average daily membership in the prior fiscal year.
    (4) For all students, per year per eligible student, an amount of up to forty-five
percent (45%) of the average State per pupil allocation for average daily
membership in the prior fiscal year, unless the student qualifies for a higher
    amount under this subsection

Good education ain’t cheap! This opening the welfare program to richer North Carolinians will nearly double the overall cost of the NC school choice ‘scholarship” program!! Why? Rich people already send their kids to costly private school and can now get state subsidies!

The goal of modern conservatism is to take EVERY opportunity to punish the poor (takers) and reward the wealthy (makers). Ms Washington would probably take her subsidy and buy crack while the wealthy guy would build a factory with his subsidy.

The NC GOPhers just need to man up, and eliminate ALL public education in NC and instead completely subsidize private educational institutions. That way private school entrepreneurs could take a piece of the action.

CliffsNotes version just for The Bedwetter:

NC Republicans pass a bill that subsidizes Gov Cooper’s kid’s expensive education, and conservatives whine that Gov Cooper sends his kid to an expensive school!

    Pups,
Just a little FYI. Our liberal troll for years has been referring to weight associated with combinations of molecules as if the pounds and tons are the same as ordinary weight. Not true. It is Avogadro pounds. Has nothing to do with ordinary weight measures. Yet another distortion and lie.

    • Elwood P. Dowd says:

If one can’t understand how burning gasoline can yield more CO2 mass than the starting mass of gasoline this may help:

The complete combustion of octane, C8H18, a component of gasoline, proceeds as follows: 2 C8H18 + 25 O2 –>16 CO2 + 18 H2O; gasoline reacts with oxygen yielding carbon dioxide and water! The mass of CO2 coming out is greater than the mass of input gasoline because the oxygens combine with the carbons!!

Avogadro is not just a good idea, it’s the law!! What’s heavier? A pound of lead or a pound of avogadros???

Anyone who genuinely believes that Donald J Trump won the 2020 election AND the only solution is violent revolution, it should taint every other thing they recite.
