Green groups at COP28 demand U.S. halt support for LNG
More than 250 environmental and community groups on Thursday called on the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden to halt its support for liquefied natural gas (LNG) due to the super-cooled fuel’s contribution to climate change.
The groups, led by Friends of the Earth, released a letter to Biden at the COP28 United Nations climate summit in Dubai, where dozens of nations are pushing for a global agreement to phase out use of CO2-emitting fossil fuels like LNG.
LNG is natural gas used for heating and electricity that has been cooled to a liquid state for shipping and storage. Climate activists advocate for phasing out fossil fuels like LNG and replacing them with renewable sources like wind and solar.
The letter demands that the administration stop permitting new LNG facilities and cease financial and diplomatic support for the industry.
I suspect most of them do not live in cold areas that get lots of snow, and do not take well to solar and wind, or remote areas where they can’t run long electric lines. Or areas where it is cloudy a lot. These wackos are always demanding that Everyone comply with their cult beliefs. It’s not like “About 60% of U.S. homes use natural gas for space and water heating, cooking, and drying clothes.”

When the lunatics start demanding an end to Chinese and Indian coal plants, I might listen. With Russia, the primary supplier of natural gas to keep western Europe from freezing over the long winter, using natural gas as a weapon against the NATO nations supporting Ukraine, the US and other suppliers resorted to LNG ships to ship gas to Europe. If it weren’t for that ability, Russia could have frozen NATO out during the winter of 2021-22.
People don’t seem to realize just how far north much of Europe is. Almost all of Germany is north of our northern border with Canada; Berlin sits on the same latitude as the southern border of Labrador! A significant part of France is north of the 49th parallel, and the Low Countries, as well as the Baltic States, are all north of that line as well. Atlantic currents sort of protect Great Britain and the Low Countries, but they’re all still northerly. The Mediterranean Sea is at the same latitudes as the middle of the United States.
My family are currently on a short trip to Barcelona, Spain, normally thought of as a pleasant, southern European city, but at 41.3874° North, Barcelona is at roughly the same latitude as Chicago!
Europe’s climate depends on warming by the Gulf Stream and the prevailing winds (W–>E) of the Mediterranean area.
Since we humans have shown little appetite for reducing our dependence on fossil fuels, we’ll just have to see what nature holds for us.

Again Teach seems to misinterpret what the letter said. It called for the end of federal support (SOCIALISM!) for that industry.
Europeans will freeze without Russia?
Europe relies on natural gas for 25$ of its total energy needs. 1/2 of that (1/8 of the total) comes from Russia. Russia needs money more than Europe needs cheap Russian gas.

The groups “urged” stopping expansion of the liquefied methane (LNG) industry. Methane (CH4) is a GHG more some 30 times more potent than carbon dioxide. BTW, burning methane produces CO2 and water.
