NM Gov. Grisham pushes gun control, public safety as Legislature reconvenes
New Mexico’s governor presented a broad suite of legislative proposals on gun control and enhanced penalties for violent crime Friday, vowing to forge new pathways through the complex landscape of constitutional law in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to expand gun rights.
The announcements by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, a second-term Democrat, puts public safety at the forefront of a 30-day legislative session that starts Tuesday. The fast-paced session is limited to budget negotiations — and initiatives chosen by the governor.
“The constitutionality questions are beginning to be very complicated in the arena of gun violence,” Lujan Grisham said. “We are going to continue this effort, following what is going on around the country. … There will be others who will follow in our footsteps, creating their own public safety corridors, which in effect also make New Mexicans safer.”
So, they are going to make it harder for law abiding citizens to defend themselves from the criminality the Democrats create with their terrible, soft on crime laws and policies.
Germane proposals will include a ban on guns at public parks and playgrounds with felony penalties for violations — expanding a hallmark of the governor’s ongoing declaration of a public health emergency related to gun violence and drug abuse.
Democratic legislators are seeking a 14-day waiting period for background checks on gun purchases and a minimum age set to 21 on purchases of semiautomatic rifles and shotguns.
A proposal from Democratic state Rep. Andrea Romero of Santa Fe would place new limitations on assault-style weapons to reducing a shooter’s ability to fire off dozens of rounds a second and attach new magazines to keep firing.
A list of more than 20 public-safety bills, sponsored mostly by Democratic legislators, extend beyond gun safety to a panhandling ban and expanded criminal provisions related to retail theft as local stores have resorted to padlocking clothes. The proposals also include felony penalties for teachers and coaches who ignore hazing incidents in the wake of alleged locker-room assaults involving New Mexico State basketball players.
Yeah, they had to include some measures to deal with their previous idiocy on going easy on criminals. Because criminals will follow these laws and the gun laws. Have fun with the lawsuits if passed! Republicans should offer amendments, since they cannot necessary stop the anti-2nd Amendment bills, that strip those who protect the governor of “assault rifles”, large capacity magazines, and where they can carry weapons in public.
Interestingly, these same people freak about a 72 hour waiting period for abortions, which are not constitutional rights
The Chief of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, SEPTA, complained yesterday:
The “offender,” one Quadir Humphrey, turns 18 today; his crimes were all committed as a minor. Minors are legally barred from possession of firearms, and his first offense, a gun charge, occurred when Mr Humphrey was just 15-years-old.
However, the Chief was wrong: young Mr Humphrey was not locked up, other than the time it took to bail him out: The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that all of his charges are still “pending in juvenile court.”
Well, now he’s been caught for a third offense, in which he fired six shots into a crowd at the City Hall SEPTA train station, on the Market Street-Frankford Line — the MF Line, I’d call it — and one of the bullets hit a 16-year-old, who was not specifically targeted, in the head. At least as of last night, Fox 29 News reported that he had a “non-survivable brain injury” while a non-media report stated that the victim is “brain dead”.
I don’t know if it was the George Soros-sponsored, police-hating, soft-as-Charmin-on-crime District Attorney, Larry Krasner, and his minions, who have kept his juvenile cases from actually being tried, or the Defenders Association of Philadelphia, his current defense attorneys, or a combination of both, who’ve kept the cases “pending,” but they’ve done Mr Humphrey no favors. Instead of maybe a year in juvie, getting out around March of this year, he was out on the streets, able to do stupid s(tuff), and now he’s looking a life sentence dead in the eye.
Pennsylvania’s gun control laws did absolutely nothing to keep Mr Humphrey from having a weapon, and Philadelphia’s legal system did nothing to punish previous violations, and now a random 16-year-old is going to become stone-cold graveyard dead.
So, why do the left, themselves seemingly brain dead, think that gun control laws which make things harder for the law-abiding, will do jack s(tuff) to prevent crimes?
As we have all known – for close to 30 years now – Democrats are perfectly comfortable with a certain level of violence that they believe will help them achieve their disarmament objectives.
No elected / professional Democrat anywhere cares about anyone’s health or safety apart from his own, not even in the abstract. Not a single one. Each and every bit of the mindless caterwauling about “gun crime” is in the pursuit of disarming the American public.
The thing is, since this tactic hasn’t worked, the amount of violence they are prepared to tolerate has risen sharply, and will continue to rise; moreover, they will increasingly shift from merely tolerating violence to propagate the usual talking points to generating that violence, either officially or through proxies.

It was never about making poor neighborhoods safer because they couldn’t give a rats *** about black people. Currently Elwood stands against everything that America has been built on. Including freedom. If it was in his power he would either incarcerate or execute President Trump his followers and most of us here if it meant that Biden and the Democrats win the election in 2024. But I absolutely doubt that he would admit it.
What Democrats are blind to is that high crime encourages normal, non-criminal Americans to buy and carry guns. If Law enforcement is effective, no one spends the extra $500 to carry a round a lump of metal that tears holes in their clothing. Democrats think that their high crime stats are working because it works on other democrats… the Fascist kind who think they have the right and authority to tell everyone else how to live.
If you want fewer American to have and carry guns, lower the crime rate. Guns are not causing higher crime. Criminals are. Safe people disarm themselves. People at risk, arm themselves. Governments trying to disarm their own people by force indicates you are not safe.
This is also why Democrats continue to focus on “mass shootings”. Even though they are exceptionally rare events, they are almost always carried out by mentally deranged people (Democrats) who don’t have a criminal record.
What Republicans are blind to is that the crime rate has declined since the early 90s, and after a bump in the past few years is declining again.
An AR-15 with a 30 round magazine is not very useful protection against street crime and is not even the best choice for “home defense”.

Why would you say something that stupid? It’s extremely useful protection against street crime I don’t recall anybody claiming it was the “best” choice for home defense. But it is a choice. And it’s an effective choice.

Just like you can’t accurately say how many Americans died from the COVID vaccine you can’t say with any real accuracy the political affiliation of mass murderers. The reason for that is because the news media who is run by Democrats chooses not to either investigate it or report on it. And the fact that they don’t proves more Democrats are mass murderers because if they weren’t the NYT would be screaming it from the rooftops.
It’s the same reason we know the election of 2020 was a steal. You refuse to accurately report on it, investigate or audit it or even have a reasonable discussion about it. You’d rather arrest us or kill us.

For the record, the best home defense weapon is a pump-action shotgun. The sound of that slide is enough to make anyone think twice without having to actually discharge a weapon.
